Ruger Turtle Update
Saturday, February 19, 2011
For those of you who did not see my first Ruger Turtle blog in September (the hatchling hubby rescued and brought home) here is the link complete with baby pictures:
and a follow up
He is doing really well and has already outgrown the Mangrove Swamp I bought for him. His new abode is a large size Rubbermaid container with a large basking rock, a "hut" made out of the bottom of a large size dark colored plastic bottle, with his UVB/UVA lamp clamped on the side to give him the 8 hrs light required for optimal health.
When I go to see him in the morning he comes out of his "hut" swims over and looks up at me with his beady little eyes. I know he is just looking for food, but it is kind of cute to think that perhaps he is coming to say good morning to his Mommy. He eats an array of food, both commercially prepared for Turtles as well as baby feeder fish bought at the pet store for him to learn how to forage for himself, cooked chicken (one of his favorites) and cooked shrimps (his other favorite).
With an SD card to show his growth
Handsome little face
"You looking at me??"
Periscope up - all clear ahead
On the lam
He can get quite the scamper on and if you turn your back for a moment he's gone!
I wll acclimatize him in the spring for his release - he is a wild animal and I only wanted to increase his chance of winter survival, but I'm not kidding myself: it will be bittersweet to let him go.
