What I've learned in 6 weeks with SparkPeople

6 weeks ago I started my journey to a healthier lifestyle with the help of SparkPeople. I've lost almost 15 lbs and now go to the gym 5 or 6 days a week! I am so grateful that this site exists, offering so many wonderful tools to point us on our way to reaching our goals. Support is essential and I'm extremely appreciative of the encouragement I receive from my SparkFriends and from people I don't even know! The teams are excellent and I'm enjoying forming relationships and working towards my goals with others I'm meeting along the way.
So here's what I think is important as we work towards our goals:
Don't make it all about the scale!! It's amazing to me how many people are actually bummed out when they've "only lost 1/2 a pound" or "I only lost 1 lb this week." That's still a weight loss! This isn't Biggest Loser where we're going to lose 15 lbs a week! SP recommends a 1 - 2 lb weight loss per week. So does Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, etc. That's the "typical" amount. When you lose slowly you have more time to make the changes permanent. This isn't a diet, it's a new way of life! If you keep eating less, making healthy food choices, and moving more, the weight will come off.
Find other ways to see progress. Take your measurements every month. You'll start to see the inches coming off and know that you're becoming a smaller you. Notice when you're able to walk for longer periods of time or do more at the gym. That means you're getting stronger!! That's something to celebrate.
The ONLY way we won't succeed is if we quit! Make a pact with yourself that you'll keep going no matter what the scale says. Don't let it derail or discourage you because the scale will fluctuate. Find someone to make a commitment with (thank you SUGARBEHONEYPIE) so that you're accountable to someone. Sandi & I are committed to continue working towards our goals no matter how long it takes and, more importantly, to stay with SP and maintain the weight loss.
Hope this gave some food for thought (at least you won't have to write down any calories LOL.)
Take it one day at a time and we will get there, together with SP.
