What I've learned in 6 weeks with SparkPeople

Monday, February 14, 2011

6 weeks ago I started my journey to a healthier lifestyle with the help of SparkPeople. I've lost almost 15 lbs and now go to the gym 5 or 6 days a week! I am so grateful that this site exists, offering so many wonderful tools to point us on our way to reaching our goals. Support is essential and I'm extremely appreciative of the encouragement I receive from my SparkFriends and from people I don't even know! The teams are excellent and I'm enjoying forming relationships and working towards my goals with others I'm meeting along the way.

So here's what I think is important as we work towards our goals:

Don't make it all about the scale!! It's amazing to me how many people are actually bummed out when they've "only lost 1/2 a pound" or "I only lost 1 lb this week." That's still a weight loss! This isn't Biggest Loser where we're going to lose 15 lbs a week! SP recommends a 1 - 2 lb weight loss per week. So does Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, etc. That's the "typical" amount. When you lose slowly you have more time to make the changes permanent. This isn't a diet, it's a new way of life! If you keep eating less, making healthy food choices, and moving more, the weight will come off.

Find other ways to see progress. Take your measurements every month. You'll start to see the inches coming off and know that you're becoming a smaller you. Notice when you're able to walk for longer periods of time or do more at the gym. That means you're getting stronger!! That's something to celebrate.

The ONLY way we won't succeed is if we quit! Make a pact with yourself that you'll keep going no matter what the scale says. Don't let it derail or discourage you because the scale will fluctuate. Find someone to make a commitment with (thank you SUGARBEHONEYPIE) so that you're accountable to someone. Sandi & I are committed to continue working towards our goals no matter how long it takes and, more importantly, to stay with SP and maintain the weight loss.

Hope this gave some food for thought (at least you won't have to write down any calories LOL.)

Take it one day at a time and we will get there, together with SP.

That is so true I started my weight loss challenge at the first of the year with my family. I was the only one to not lose in our first 2 weeks. Surprisingly this did not discourage me. I had decided that it wasn't really about the weight for me as much as just getting healthier. That decision has really helped me on this journey. emoticon

So very true. I know I'm one of those people that looks at the number as well as the next person. I only lost .4 pound this week but I have to look at the fact that at least it's a lose and I am gaining new eating habits as I go forward. Great blog emoticon

Great blog! Thank you for sharing it with us! You are so correct! The measurements are a great way of seeing how much you have accomplished too! I try to remind people that the weight did not show up overnight! Therefore it is not going to be gone overnight! It takes time, hard work and dedication! When someone asks wow, have you lost weight? Answer that with pride! Yes, yes I have lost weight! I have been working hard at changing my life and I am succeeding! Thank you for noticing! Keep up the good luck, and keep us posted on your success!!!

Great blog! And not because I'm mentioned LOL!! Your words are just so encouraging and inspiring. You've worked hard for those lbs to come off, but you have worked just as hard at being a great Sparkfriend to all who cross your path. It's because of one of your Huddle comments ('send a Sparkgoodie to making progress')that I now search the Huddles and do just that, as well as stopping by to encourage 'I need Support.' Your examples of breaking down goals helped me to fine-tune my Sparkpage, and I now have 15 Mini-Goals to meet before my final number is in place. I now try to help others see that Mini-Goals add up to BIG losses over time. You've been a great role model to so many, in so many ways. Keep up the good work emoticon
