Kale Chips...

Sunday, February 13, 2011

I made 'em. Thought they were tasty. My husband said he would rather eat paper, but I found them crunchy and salty-two things that I do crave. Kale is a superfood nutritionwise and I have never used it before. Bought it and watched it get old and stale but didn't know what to do with it. I will make these again.
And I think that you could use them with a dip like hummus-there are a bunch of reciepes for them on SparkPeople.

I used really fresh kale, I bought it yesterday at our organic farm stand and it was beautiful, crispy and dark green. I chose to roast it at 250, some of the reciepes said to go as hi as 400, but we are talking about a leafy green here. I roast potatos at 400. So, I preheated the oven, washed and spun the kale dry and tore it into small-med size chunks, tearing off and discarding the center rib.
Put half a head on a cookie sheet, tossed with 1 tsp olive oil, grind of sea salt and grind of pepper. Cooked for 30 min. It is a bit like eating crispy air, but I did find it as satisfying as eating potato chips and I felt better afterwards!

What can I say you and the green stuff always get along great! I guess that is why you have done so good. The green stuff and you are best fiends. emoticon

I love kale...we grow it every summer and eat it into the winter months. Don't discard the center rib, steam it...very very good!

I've never made kale chips, but I will definitely try it!

Good job trying something never know if you like it 'til you try it (my mom's words echoing in my head). glad you found a healthier alternative that takes care of the crunchy/salty cravings...If you find anything that works for chocolate cravings, let me know emoticon

Congrats on the "Kale Experiment." Trying new foods is awesome, and kale is so good for us. I tried making chips once - yuk. But I love kale soup!

If I can find fresh kale (!) I might give it a shot. We have a 'chili infused' light olive oil that is really good, so I could try it with the kale. While it may be 'crispy air' in texture, how was the taste? I mean, fairly bland, or strong and bitter-ish, the way dark greens tend to be?
