Losing Weight After 50

Thursday, February 10, 2011

When I retired from teaching last May I decided to quit smoking. My retirement health insurance included an incentive for nonsmokers. Thinking that I needed to replace my smoking habit with something else I decided to join a gym and start exercising. For several months I walked two miles a day , did the weight machines and the elliptical machine in the gym. Because I spent so much time exercising I did not gain any weight after quitting smoking.
After I had conquered that habit I decided that it was time for me to get in shape and get healthy. However, I was afraid that I would be fighting a losing battle because of my age. So, I thought to myself that I would give it my best shot for a year and then if I did not lose any weight I would just have to except being overweight.
The first thing I had to do was find a plan that would work for me. Having been a yo yo dieter for most of my life I had tried about all of the diets out there. I remembered that I had been told about Spark People several years ago and I had even joined. At that time I was just too busy to really get into it. However, this time I did most everything that was recommended on the site. After the first month I could see a difference on the scales as well as how good I was beginning to feel. I guess by the end of next December I won't have to except being this weight.

Congratulations on your achievements. I too quit smoking at 49. I did not want to turn 50 and be a smoker. That combined with menopause has been a huge challenge. Ahh, life is great because situations make us stronger.

I just joined the Losing Weight After 50 and wanted to find out if you would like to post an update there. The posts are great and it is just where I am at. Stop by if you have a chance.

    All the best! emoticon

Thanks for the very(!) motivational blog. The part that makes me sit up and say, 'wow!' is that you quit smoking and substituted exercise in! Awesome! I wish you all the best as you continue on your journey.
