NE Montana is experiencing a cold snap. Yesterday morning when I went to work it was about -23F. We had a bit of a warmup, clear to -16F, but when I left for home it was about -25F again.
So then when I walked in the house I heard this sound. It took some seconds to realize that it was the sound of gushing water... I went downstairs and waded over to the shutoff valve and turned it off. Water in my basement is not an uncommon occurrence, so I opened the drain. Lo and behold, nothing happened! Not a good result.
The basement has a dirt floor, so there is lots of mud as the water sprayed over quite an area. I figure that the pipe where the water goes up to the kitchen sink froze and split. I haven't had time to check it out completely and it's too cold to do much for it anyway.
I managed to get a gallon milk jug filled with water -- there is a faucet just above the shut off valve.
This morning I went down and shut off the water to the hot water tank and turned the valve on enough to figure out that it is the cold water line that is broken. Then I cut a chunk out of it so that I could get the right size cap for the end I cut. When I get that installed, I should be able to turn the water on and have water in the house again, everywhere except cold to the kitchen sink.
The water level dropped a couple inches overnight and was almost all the way gone when I got home this evening.
I still have to figure out what is with the sewer line. I suppose that it is frozen, but I need to fugure out where so I can get it unplugged. That will probably have to wait until Thursday when it is supposed to warm up and I have the day off.
The never ending joys of home ownership...
My weigh-in on Sunday was the same as last week. I didn't do too well with my goals except for the water one, although I did track my food fairly consistently. I did get in some cardio that wasn't shoveling snow...
It's now -30F (predicted low was -28F) but hopefully it won't get to the -40F of last night. It got up to -16F today and is supposed to get above zero tomorrow. I'm ready!!
Enough kvetching about the weather -- Have a good week everybody and remember to eat well.
