Strength training

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

OK, so what I love to do is run and do yoga. I get some strength training from the yoga, but definitely not enough. There have been times when I have been really focusing on the strength (particularly kettlebell training, which I like and know is very effective) but lately I just cannot get off my duff to do it!! I have set what I think is a reasonable goal of just two strength training sessions a week and am making a statement here with the hope that I will actually do it!

My weekly schedule, then, will look something like this:

Monday - Run (usually an easy run, 3-5 miles)

Tuesday - Strength (KB)

Wednesday - Easy run + teach Holy Yoga this week (most weeks the run is a quality workout of either a tempo or speed session)

Thursday - Short, easy run

Friday - Strength (KB)

Saturday - Long run + teach Holy Yoga

Sunday - Rest

I also practice Holy Yoga a couple more times a week, usually on the shorter workout days... and try to use the foam roller in the evenings. I am not putting either of these into the schedule, though, since I think if I try to add too much into a formal schedule I will just overwhelm myself. I do need to get organized though!!

This morning I got up a little late but still wanted to get my KB workout in. Then, got upstairs and realized the new DVD player won't work on my DVD menu without the remote... which I could not find. Ugh. Instead I just did 15 minutes of KB exercises. Baby steps, right? My usual plan for this will be to use my Iron Core DVDs. I am sure there will be lots of days when I will only have 20 minutes but I am still going to "count" that as my strength training for the day.
