10 Miles Done! 4 Wks to 1st Half Marathon.

Never in my life would I have dreamed that I could do this. Well, yes, I could dream it...ha... but to actually do it. OMG.

But... I did it! I made it this morning! Alive and all in one piece. T-E-N looooooooooooong miles! Whew.

I was dreading this run more than all the others for sure just because of the distance. Out of my entire 4 months training schedule, this is one of the two biggest runs as we're nearing the end (HM is on Feb 20th). You know, the double digits runs. SCARY!!!!!! And even though I had completed the 9 miles two weeks ago, this was still daunting.

So I was NERRRR----VOUS! emoticon emoticon

So here was my last 24 hours. Last night. Got home early. Packed my bag for the morning run. Prayed. Took out my run clothes and knee braces. Prayed. Made a sandwich and protein smoothie and packed it for the morning for the post-run. Prayed. Took 2 Alteril (to get a good night's sleep). Prayed. (lol... are you seeing a pattern here?) Did a bit of work before bed. Prayed. Fell asleep. Woke up at 6am. Prayed. (lol)... Got ready. Prayed. Took my vitamins grabbed my stuff and headed out the door. Prayed even more.

Got there and 7am we're off. emoticon emoticon

First off all, it was pretty darn cold (for South Florida, lol). 46 degrees. And people say it doesn't get cold down here. Yeah right. Try running that with a windchill coming straight off the ocean and smacking you in the face, making it more like 35 degrees. I was ok but my fingers and one ear was frozen, ha.

Miles 1-3, excellent, warmed up nicely and ended at the pier. Circled back with ease. And went by fast.

Miles 3-5 still awesome, feeling warm and good. Ear has thawed (lol) and I can feel all of my fingers and toes. Stopped briefly for a much needed bathroom break. Hallelujah. I swear as I went to the ladies, I couldn't feel my thighs or my butt or my waist...lol. EVERYTHING was completely numb. It was so funny. Got back on track and passed our morning START point to go down the other side of the beach boardwalk.

Miles 5-8, annoyed. Here was the "fun" part. There was some CanadaFest happening on the boardwalk and there were tent shops and crowds all over the place. Had to duck and dive and dodge almost the entire way. And the people everywhere are always asking us questions, about who we are (since we are a rather big group). Took a little bit more out of me then I expected. But I made it. We all did. We doubled back and finally got rid of the crowds.

Miles 8-9. I hit my wall. Now it's no longer my left knee giving me problems, but rather my right knee now. Twinging and cramping. But not terribley like my left knee injury before. So funny how before it was the left, now it's the right. Hopefully this ailment will realize it has no other knee of mine to bother and it'll go away... you know like in one knee, out the other, lol. Anyway.... I was losing my breathing and slowing. But pushing nonetheless. "Keep going, keep going, you can do it."

Miles 9-10. Wall HIT, but unfortunately instead of me knocking "it" over, "it" knocked me over....(laughing) People, I was tired. And I was struggling. I started increasing my walking breaks just to get by. My recovery was less and less, but I kept at it. "Just keep going". So I kept up a fast walk pace and ran on occasion. I was never in jeopardy of completely stopping, but I completely lost my pace.

Mile 10!!! I took up the last 50 yards or so and just ran it in. I was good, just really, really tired. And my right knee is twingy and a bit week. But praises be... I made it!!!!! As I walked around and stretched to cool down, I took out the ice pack I had brought. I always ice me knee post run now. So I got that baby cooled on my inclined knee while chatting with the group and binging on the orange slices they had out for us. Still amazed.



Quick assessment. Even though I was a hot mess, I was good. And I'm still good now. Surprisingly! Finished 10 miles stronger than even when I finished the 9 miles. It's amazing how your body really does adapt and flourish with proper care, nutrition and discipline.

So 4 weeks until the A1A Half Marathon!!! Woot.

Oh, and here's a little pic of the morning sunrise when I first arrived. Just lovely...

    Running a double digit run for the first time is indeed scary yet empowering! You will get used to the feeling after you do it a few times. Your first HM is one you will never forget! Best wishes!

    Congratulations on your ten miler. When I was training for a full, my coach would say that eventually ten miles would be the "low" miles. I never did believe her but after 18 and 20, I did.
    Good luck at A1A. I don't think I will be doing it this year after four years in a row. I am doing ING Miami half this Sunday.
    I love the picture. I was out at 5:00am yesterday and you are so right. It was cold. I had two shirts, a jacket and gloves. emoticon

    Awesome! Isn't it the best feeling to finish strong? :) I also ran a 10-miler yesterday and sprinted the last 1/4 mile, it made me feel almost euphoric! LOL!

    You must be so proud of yourself! I bet you are going to run that 1/2 marathon without trouble. Hope the knee holds up!

    Whoo hoo - isn't that first ten miler an awesome feeling?!

    I am training for my first half marathon too, funnily enough it's on exactly the same date - Feb 20th. Only your 'chilly temperature" sounds like heaven to me. Lol I'm training in 8•F and brrrrrrrrr now that is CHILLY.

    Good luck with the race - Do you have a time goal in mind?

    Sounds like you are all ready for the big day. Congrats on your run and sticking with it. Since your knee does complain, think about ways you can improve your form - after all, it repetition, repetition, repetition in long distance (1200-2000 steps per mile) and if you are toeing out, that will torque your knee. A small adjustment could have you pain free (but keep the ice handy).
    Stretch and refuel and keep praying - it's working! emoticon

    10 miles! WOW! I'm officially training for 15K and I'm nervous about bumping it up to 7 or 8, not mention 9.32. I'm running a pretty good 6 miles right now, but my knee starts to ache and I get a blister on the side of my foot in the same spot every time. Some new running shoes may solve both of these problems, so I'm going to get that taken care of very soon. Awesome job on 10 miles! You totally got this HM! emoticon emoticon

    I just walked in the door from walking 5K....Tomorrow night is my running group and I have been having serious doubts about trying to do the Gasparilla 5K at the end of Feb. I've been doing fine walking and running with the group, but it took me close to an hour to walk 5K today. Feeling kinda anxious about this.

    I feel great...and after we walk/run I feel great...but I don't know how long it'll take me to progress to a less than turtle time!
    Your blog makes me want to keep on trying...but I'm also trying to be realistic. Maybe the Gasparilla isn't the thing to shoot for. There are 5K's all the time. And not getting hurt as I progress is the most important.
    My new shoes are awesome tho. What a difference! Love them!

    Isn't the cool weather crazy? Can't believe it was that cold down there. We were in the mid 30's in Tampa. Brrrr. I didn't go out til it was warmed up.

This was an excellent milestone and I'm glad you've shared your running experiences on here. It gives me the hope and gumption to hopefully, one day, know that I can cross a race finish line too.     I LOVED this blog! What an amazing experience! I want to get back into running, and I promised myself just this morning that I'm gonna run a 5K in 2011. (I have a little, OK, a lot of work to do before I can imagine running more than a mile, let alone 3+, but I'm gonna do it!) Keep up the great work!!!
