The New Me: Part 1- My Hair!!!

Saturday, January 22, 2011

emoticonYard sign for a hair salon:
"If your hair is not becoming to you, you will be coming to us."

Primary Belief: Hair is a woman's crowning glory.
Question: How important is hair care to my self esteem?
Question: How important is it to have my hair done professionally every week?

Through out history woman have done whatever it takes to beautify, straighten, curl and perfume our hair. Personally, I have tried almost every hair care product from mayonnaise, egg yolks to olive oil, Royal Crown, V05. If you can name it, I have probably tried it.

My Grandmother grew up in a Native American village. The young women would wait for the hunters to come home with a bear. They would use every part of that bear. The fur was used for housing, clothing, bedding, the meat for food, the teeth and bones for tools, jewelry and the bear fat was melted down and used for cooking and for hair grease.

To a female, hair is our crowning glory. And men know that too. There are some kind and generous men who know how important a nice hairdo contributes to the overall complete touch to a woman's beauty. They will pay a lady a compliment or pay for their hair and nails to be professionally done every week.

And then there are men who are jealous and do not like other men looking at their women at all. They will sabotage their woman's beauty with harsh comments thinking "that will cut her down to size".

A young African American woman worked in an "old timie" general store. She was looking forward to a very special social event and needed some expensive hair relaxer products to fix her hair.

She arranged to do some extra work and favors for the store owner in exchange for the hair products that he sold in the store. On the day before the event, her friends came by to pick her up, planning to go home to prepare their clothes and to relax her hair.

She asked the store owner for the products. He gave her a box that had been opened. Half of the products were missing from the box. He said, "That is all that I have. Turn off the TV and lock up when you are finished."

Feelings of disappointment, broken promises, intentional or unintentional discouragement and rejection from people around us, contributes to how we measure self worth.

Recently, during prayer and meditation, that same type of discouraging spirit lifted from me. I did not even realize that I was harboring feelings of rejection and discouragement. It seemed that I really did not think that it would matter if I strive to be the best that I could be or not. The results always seemed to be the same. More rejection and broken promises.

In retrospect, I remember that I was feeling discouraged, lonely and rejected when I first started gaining weight. I stopped wearing fashionable clothes, stopped watching what I ate and stopped getting my hair professionally done every week. I starting going every other week, then once a month and then when ever there was a special occasion. Soon, when I looked in the mirror, if my hairdo was not fresh, I did not feel so pretty. Soon, after that, I accepted that maybe I was not so pretty.

O.K. Hair is a woman's crowning glory and if I am not wearing my hair in it's most attractive state, then as a Christian woman, I have taken off my crown and forgotten that I am a Princess in the Kingdom of God.

Neglecting my hair seems to have done more damage to my self esteem than any other thing that I can actually think of.

That is when I started thinking, I need to turn this sour lemon into lemonade and quick.

I will be setting an appointment to schedule weekly visits to the hair salon.

emoticon Just a shout out to Beautiful October2842!

Do what you have to girl to wear your hair the way that is most becoming to you.

You could ask someone who is wearing a hairstyle that you like where she goes and visit that hairdresser on a day when your friend is busy or out of town. If you like your new do, show it to your friend and ask her to fix your hair the same way.

I wish i could afford the salon every week. My hair dresser never does what I want her to do and I usually feel like yukky when I am done. It is a chore for me. I know I need a new hairdresser but mine is a friend and hard to leave.
