Just gotta share...

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

I just spent the nicest hour and remembered how lucky and blessed I am.

The sun is finally shining today and the temps are above 50-actually I think they are closer to 60, it's a beautiful day to be outside here.

I weeded my vegetable boxes, I planted onion sets and red cabbage in October and harvested some carrots and radishes that were ready that I had planted from seeds in the fall. My snow peas are blooming and I have a box full of beautiful oak leaf, red romaine and a few other kinds of lettuces. I sowed another crop today to harvest around St. Paddy's Day.

My neighbor Joe came over as he often does when I'm working out in the yard-my vegetable garden is in the front yard and I showed him my harvest. Joe is retired from Silicon Valley but he and his wife Josephine both came from Sicily when they were young. Joe was trained in Italy as a horticulturist so he always has some good info for me-altho he was impressed with my winter's harvest-he's a traditional gardener and just does the spring planting. I told him I was going to the nursery tomorrow to buy some artichoke plants and a rhubarb plant for the front yard. He went home and came back with two artichoke plants that he had divided from his-planted 24 years ago when he and Josephine moved to that house, brought from their home in San Jose and originally came from Sicily.
I have Sicilian artichokes now in my front yard! How cool is that???

I am glad that you had a great day. Bonus plants to boot! I always like those sunny days when you are able to be out with nature. Looks like you have a head start on the planting in the garden.

I am not a gardener, but sure would love to be able to do some right now. I have grown plenty of white stuff out there right now. emoticon Snow ice cream anyone?

Glad some blessings came your way today. You deserved it.

That is very cool! There is nothing like a good neighbor, too. You're doubly blessed.

Wow, I loved this blog...mind if I live vicariously through you for a few minutes? Ahhh, to be outdoors working in my flower gardens...my favorite therapy!

Susan, I think it was therapy for you...just what the doctor ordered. You sound more content and satisfied than the past few days. Nothing like working in the soil and harvesting nature's bounty to lift the spirits and brighten the day! And, how special is that? You neighbor entrusted you with part of his Sicilian artichoke...what a special gesture. emoticon

I am sooooo jealous!!! How exciting for you. It's January 12th and you are talking about being in your garden. It was 9 degrees when I woke up this morning. I can't wait to plant a garden this spring. What a wonderful gift the artichokes were.

That is awesom, Susan! I'm not a gardener (dislike fruits and veggies), but my DH is an avid gardener. I'm not sure where you live, but up here in NE Wisconsin, there'll be no gardening until late April or so. But he would love to be able to garden year round. Glad you enjoyed your day!
