31 Days - What's Your Plan B? - January 12

Today's Spark tip is to:
Develop a plan B. Work, travel, or kids will disrupt your routine, so create alternatives: walk during
lunch, choose healthy fast foods, or wake up earlier. Doing something is always better than doing
This is a great tip. I am happy to report that I do have a lot of those Plan B's in place (my "go to" fast food breakfast is a 300 calorie Egg McMuffin from McDonald's; my emergency fast food lunch or dinner is a plain grilled chicken sandwich with only lettuce and tomato from whatever fast food restaurant is convenient to me; I always have my gym bag in my van in case I don't get my morning exercise in, though that is the least often used alternative due to the packed schedule I have most days.
But better than the fact that I have these Plan Bs is the fact that since this year began, I have taken steps to organize my life in such a fashion that I, at least for the first 12 days of 2011, have not needed them. For instance, one of the greatest obstacles to my morning exercise has been that I get distracted and derailed by my other morning chores, mostly making lunches for all three of us, getting the dog fed, straightening out, plus the personals, morning bathroom routines, etc. I set out to absolutely do it better this year by:
1) making lunch sandwiches RIGHT after dinner at night, and to the extent I have to "pack" snacks (carrots and grapes in baggies, etc) I do that too. All this takes 10 minutes (and it always seems to take so much longer in the morning!) and it's DONE, then in the morning, all I have to do is put everything in our lunch bags,
2) get out of bed no later than 5:15 am. That gives me plenty of time to have my coffee, do my sparking, do my personal bathroom stuff, put together the lunches, etc, by 6:30, which is the cut off time for getting myself back up to my room to do my workout.. If my son is awake before I have to go up, he feeds the dog; if not, I do, but either way, that does not really take a lot of time..
3) the last piece to this puzzle is that I have to go to bed early enough to make 5:15 am a palatable waking time, and that is perhaps the easiest piece of all. I just accompany my little T upstairs when it's time for him to get ready for bed, and generally stay up there..so I'm usually in bed by 9 and asleep by 9:30.
These steps not only put me iin a position to get my morning exercise in, but also alleviate the need for alternative eating plans (the fast food) that I have established.
Contrary to what others might believe possible, I actually ENJOY morning exercise. I have certainly exercised at other times of the day and it's been okay, but given my druthers, I'd rather do it in the morning. It gets me off on the right foot, focusing me on my journey. And the reality of my life is that the afternoons after school and early evenings, belong to my son, and that is okay with me. So making sure that I have time to do my workout in the morning has set me up for success for the entire day. Baby steps, baby steps..I do feel like it's all falling into place..
oh, and why am I still sitting here, writing away at 6:24 am?? Because my entire house has a snow day today...yippee!!
