Couch-to-5K (Week 1, Day 1)

Monday, January 03, 2011

One of my goals for 2011 is to complete the 8 week, Couch to 5K program. I started today.

For those not familiar with the program, it is a graduated walking/running program. You train 3 times per week, for 8 months.

Let me just say that I am by no means a runner. I am 40 pounds overweight, not really athletically inclined, and was usually one of the last kids picked in gym class. But what I lack in natural athletic ability, I make up in motivation, guts, chutzpah, whatever you want to call it. I'm not afraid of a challenge, and 2011 is going to be all about physical challenges.

As I stepped on the treadmill, my primary thought was, "I am going to be the fattest girl running on the treadmill". But if I keep up with the program, someday, I'll be a fit girl running on the treadmill. So I tried to ignore the voices in my head, the jiggling of my extra weight, and the people behind me that I was convinced were staring (even though I couldn't see them). It wasn't easy. I was sucking wind, and had to put my hands on the treadmill (I know, I know, it's cheating.....), and had to take an extra minute of walking during one of the walking/running combinations.

It wasn't easy, but I finished. And I felt good afterward. Not "I'm-so-glad-this-torture-is-o
ver" good, but glowing, happy endorphins good. Enough to get me back on the treadmill on Wednesday.
