Dessert After Meals

Why do I sometimes get intense cravings for something sweet after a meal?
Today I met a friend for lunch at her house. I brought over quinoa and a bean salad, and she made tofu with sauteed mushrooms. The bean salad included some avocado and corn. It was a yummy, balanced meal. But on my way back to the office, I had INTENSE cravings for soda and chocolate or some dessert. I figured I wouldn't make it until dinner, so I picked up some chocolate crisps and ate a small serving. I was able to stop.
I still really feel like drinking soda though.
This isn't the first time it's happened. I'm wondering why it does.
In other news, I biked to a doctor's appointment before work, and on my way back, I was able to make it up this intense hill alongside a steep staircase that I usually have to walk the bike up, but this time I rode the whole way! I am getting back into shape and that feels great!
The scale said a bit under 152 this morning. I'm sure some of it is lost muscle mass and perhaps slight dehydration, but it felt good to see that I didn't pack on pounds. I would have liked to have come farther in the 9 months I've been on Spark People, but you know what? It's terrific that I haven't continued to gain weight.
I believe that even that is a victory. I've changed the trajectory. And I have learned SO MUCH in the process about myself and my body and my mood and my mind.
I'm looking forward to playing basketball tonight in the park. It's been a LOOOONG time!
