31 Days to Healthier Holidays - December 15

First, an update:

Almost halfway through the month..the scale hasn't moved up, or down, for me. Does that mean this is working? I don't know. But I did get some exercise in yesterday, and I make sandwiches for lunches last night, so a bit part of my morning chores has already been accomplished.. We'll see if all this gets me upstairs and on the bike for the full 30 this morning!!

Today, Spark tells us to:

Bring a healthy dish. When attending a party, cook a healthy, low-cal dish to share. This way, you'll have at least one healthy option when you're there.

Excellent, sound advice. But...who wants to eat our own creations? Unfortunately, not I. Doesn't something that someone else made always taste better than our own cooking? I mean, I'd rather eat hot dogs boiled on the stove by someone else than the chicken dinner I made myself..

Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but not much. So...what's the solution? If you can do portion control, the most obvious solution is to grab a plate and a bit of this and a bit of that, eat and enjoy every morsel, and then step away from the table and never let it in your sight again for the rest of the gathering. This is where I think the strategy of avoidance works very well..take up a conversation with someone you haven't seen in a very long while and catch up..the time passes quickly under those cirucumstances, if, of course, it's someone you enjoy seeing!! Other little tips that others have given in the course of this blog (I'm sorry, I can't remember who has said what!) are to carry around a bottle of water to keep your hands full, and I'll add another: after eating, have a hot cup or tea or coffee, which sometimes signals to my belly that the eating is over..

What distracts us is as different to each of us as we are unique..sometimes, I go into the kitchen and ask the hostess if I can help her do anything..busying myself like that is good for me, presuming, of course, I know the hostess well enough to make that offer..

One other possibility, which is great if you can, but we can't always, is to exercise right before going to a holiday gathering. The good feeling of exercise carries with me for a long time..I am much less likely to partake of the really bad gooey stuff if I have that exercise afterglow working..

    I did this one! LOL I have to take an item for the Mexican potluck on Saturday and I chose taco salad so there would at least be a healthier option available. What do I win for being ahead of your Spark tips?! emoticon

    These are all excellent tips! I always try to go to holiday events 'full', not in the least bit hungry. That helps me. emoticon
