Thursday evening, I was getting ready to lead the phone support group that I lead for the MS Society and decided to use the bathroom before we started.
Just as I was getting ready to leave, the phone rang. I knew it wasn't time for group yet, but thought that maybe one of the members needed to tell me something, so I wanted to reach it before it stopped ringing. I guess that I turned out the door a bit too quickly, because my pinkie toe stayed on one side of the door jamb when the rest of my toes made it past.
There was a sound and immediate pain...long story, somewhat shorter, the toe is broken.
So, I taped the pinkie to the toe next to it and wrapped the rest of the forefoot, because the metatarsal was also painful, and started using the ice pack 15 to 20 minutes at regular intervals. (Meka and I were alternating use of the ice packs, since he still needs it for his ear. Fortunately, we're both good sharers.
.) That night and the next day, I couldn't really put any weight on my foot at all, so I had to pretty much stay put.
By Sunday it felt considerably better. Today I reduced my Ibuprofen and had to change the wrapping again anyway, so I left it unwrapped for a while just to see how it was going. However, left to it's own devices, it started to look more black and blue and to swell again, so I re-wrapped it and just iced it again.
I was able to teach a lesson to my Feldenkrais® client and to take my turn teaching our peer group continuing education group on Sunday afternoon.
I've been using the rest of the time to look over and fill out our Christmas gift and card lists and make some progress on getting gifts and cards moving.
So... we've gotten lemons, made lemonade and we're almost ready for what's next.
What surprises have you had thus far in the holiday season?
