Great Hike on Conservation area newly opened to public for hiking & biking
Sunday, December 05, 2010
Today, Denise and I hiked on a newly opened Conservation area.
It is a huge tract of land that was formerly used for Army Reservists and National Guard training.
This area is 15 miles to our west and borders on a half dozen towns.
The Government has done a great job creating this paradise for birds and animals
out of swampy marsh land.
We hiked for two hours and did only a small section. It will be fun to get to know the rest of this territory.
It is a lot different from the last time I was here.
That time I arrived in the back of an old 2.5 ton army truck while training with the Guard.
I did my Service duty with the Guard carrying a B.A.R. at summer camps and on weekend drills.
I remember they put us in an old army barracks with no heat and it was about 30 degrees.
Then they said don't make a fire in the old wood stove.
Of course we had a fire going as soon as the Sergeant left.
Those were the days!
