22 Days Before Christmas

Friday, December 03, 2010

Most of you are probably looking forward to the Christmas Holidays. Until yesterday I was too. I finally had managed to get my plans for my DH set for the Christmas. Then I receive an email from a family member. Now this family member doesn't corespond with the family normally mainly because they are an in-law. You see I have 5 sibilings we all pretty much stay in contact on week to week basis through email. Like most sibilings from a large family we don't always see eye to eye on things. We have rarely if ever drag spouses or kids into the mix. Spouses and especially should know better than to interfere in a sibiling squabble. Especially when comes to my family squabbles are pretty common.

I was surprised and even a little put out when I read this email. Where this in-law is putting down another family member over some small insult (their wods not mine). My problem is not that he feels he has to vent. My problem is that according to him this has been going on for over a year. Now just 22 days before Christmas he makes the decision to vent. An in turn drags the whole family into it by sending all of us an email about it.

I was planning on visiting both parties this Christmas for a couple of hours. I am not sure that I can do that now at least with the in-law. Cause I don't want a rehash of the story over and over again. They have just about ruined Christmas for me.

Oh what a bummer Debbie! Family issues can be so stressful, and the holidays are tough enough to get through as it is. I hope things calm down so that you are able to visit everybody as planned . . .

My Thanksgiving was a little rocky this year due to family members blurting out less than optimal comments (I confess, I said something unkind regarding my daughter and felt bad for days about it, even though she forgave me). I cheered myself up by watching a recent movie called "The Family Stone" which is full of all kinds of family rudeness but they still obviously love each other. it's a great, funny movie, and reminds me that we probably wouldn't choose some of our family members for our closest circle of friends, but I am more honest with them than I would be with friends I would be afraid to risk losing, so I learn a lot from the interactions! Hope you all can resolve this quickly. People are so complicated!

I also come from a very large family 10 siblings. We were raised not to interfere with each other's family too. And to this day, we never have. When my parents were alive, we would always go to them with our problems, but when we got together for gathers, everyone still spoke to each other...we were cordial.

Christmas is about spending time with family and love ones. Don't let one person prevent you from sharing time with family. Sometimes you have to be the bigger person. Everyone makes dumb choices in their lives. As you said, you are only there for a few hours. Please try and make the best of this time. emoticon

Sorry about the family issues. Sometimes families are the harshest with each other :(
