31 Days to Healthier Holidays - December 3

Before I launch into today's tip, I'd like to report on how I did with the previous tips..

I went to a Christmas lunch yesterday and the menu choices were a seafood dish that included shrimp, which I am allergic to, or roast beef. So of course, I had to have the roast beef, with some roasted potatoes and carrots. A wonderful meal, made deliciously. The serving sizes were not out of control, I drank water with it.. But I did succumb to the apple crisp, which I must admit was the BEST apple crisp I've ever had, and I ate it all, not that it was a huge amount, but was wishing, after I ate it, that I had not eaten it all..that perhaps to leave just a bite..but alas, this is not about what I did wrong, it's about what I did right: I enjoyed every bite and was aware of what I was eating.. Nothing about any of this is particularly important, I think, except I tracked everything I ate yesterday..that's good mostly because my eating has been so out of control lately that by the time it came time to track, I couldn't even remember.. And my calories yesterday, though above my range, were not out of sight..

More importantly, I exercised: 20 minutes in the morning, 20 at night. If I can't get my full 30 in in the morning and can come back and do more at night, I will be a happy, happy camper..

Today's tip: splurge wisely, as there are many opportunities to splurge during the holidays, and if you splurge at every opportunity, you probably will NOT have had a healthy holiday season. I have also planned to take any gifts of food I receive during this holiday season and put them out on Christmas day, when my 65 guests are here to eat them for me! The tip is to choose one food to splurge on, like yesterday's apple crisp, and leave the rest behind. Well, okay, I didn't leave anything behind yesterday, but will endeavor to do better in the coming days and weeks.

All in all, I feel good about where I am. I am "feeling this" plan more than usual, and perhaps that means I will stick with it in the coming days and weeks..I hope so!

    You made good choices at the luncheon and even though you wish you hadn't had the entire apple crisp...at least it was something you thoroughly enjoyed so it wasn't wasted calories like the Dr. Pepper I just consumed. Proud of you!!!! I'm loving your 31 days.... great way to really think through things.

    I too managed to get a full day of tracking done (I need to for a challenge team so that extra motivation has been wonderful.) and did go over the daily today, but not by much. Since I haven't had the "planned" dinner yet I can still trim back as I go and maybe bring it down a little closer yet. Already scrapped the bun that goes with the bbq burger! I don't want that extra 115 calories now! LOL
