My Christmas Dilemma -- Wednesday's Food Blog

Wednesday, December 01, 2010

As you know I bought a house 2 weeks ago with hubby-to-be. Because of this, and all of the renovations we are in the middle of, we are beyond broke.

I am telling you all about this because I know I can trust my SP friends, and I know that this is private and ultimately separate from my personal life outside of Spark...

Christmas time is my favorite time of the year, and this year I can't go all out like I usually do. We do not even have money to buy a christmas tree for our new house together...

I am really depressed about it... but I will get over it.

What I am more upset about is not being able to purchase gifts for family and friends, which is my most favorite part of the holiday season.

Instead I have decided to can and make homemade Apple Butter, Blueberry Jam, and Cranberry Christmas Muffins to give as gifts to my grandparents, aunts/uncles, and others as a gift. I can do this for under $5 a person which is perfect!

My problem is that I am stuck on cheap ideas for others who would have no use for this such as my 20 year old sister... I need to find some creative and really cheap gifts that will show I care and am thinking about her.... but can't afford a lavish gift like I tend to usually give.

Any ideas on what I can do for gifts?

On a more positive note... I am very excited to make Apple Butter and Blueberry Jam! I have never canned before so this should be a lot of fun!!!!!!

Okay now moving on from that...

By the way I am loving life right now for the most part.... I feel good about school, work, my wedding, the house (for the most part), and my family (all but my dad who is constantly starting a fight with me and hubby-to-be about OUR house, but that is another story that I won't bore you with!)

Now for today's Food Blog:

Breakfast:

1 Cup of Cinnamon Chex w/ .25 cup 1% Milk

Mid-Morning Snack

Gingerbread Coffee w/ Almond Milk and Sugar and 1 Medium Banana w/ 1 Tbsp, Almond Butter

Lunch:

Vegetarian Chili w/ Shredded Mexican Cheese

Mid-Afternoon Snack:

2 Clementines and Chobani Strawberry-Banana Greek Yogurt

Dinner:

Pizzaria Uno's Harvest Vegetable Pizza on Multigrain and Flax Crust - I ate 1/2

I decided to weigh-in early this week because today is the 1st of the month and I weighed in at an ALL TIME LOW of 152.2# which means that I lost 4.6# in December which is not to shabby!!!!!!! WooHoo!!!!!!!!!

Cheers to the beginning of the Holiday Season.... the most magical time of year!!!

Don't worry about not being able to buy Xmas gifts this year, people understand that you just bought a house and your funds are tied up there right now. I think what you are making as gifts is a emoticon idea! I think people like those kids of gifts better than bought ones b/c they come from the heart! Some of the other girls that replied to your blog had awesome ideas as well! and as usual I LOVE LOVE LOVE Your food blog girl! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

For my girlfriends this year I'm buying martini glasses at the dollar store and decorating them with paints from the craft store. I got the idea from $20 ones available at the Hallmark store. Then I'll buy each friend one of those mini bottles from the liquor store. The paints come in a kit for $10, so I'm going to guess the cost will be about $5 pp. emoticon

I like the small photo album or collage idea! I also had a friend that made homemade vanilla! Loved it! Even a tin of homemade cookies with a nice photo would be fun too!

The best idea I have is almost identical to musicjunkay's. I love www.snapfish.com calendars, mugs, etc. you can get a 5x7 collage print for under $3. Fill the collage with family pictures, buy a $2 frame at walmart and you are good to go! They did the collage print that i had on my blog...see November 14th. Good luck (ps every product I have ever bought is top shelf quality. They are big on coupons... 25% off, free shipping, etc.)

I am in the same boat, except I don't even own a house. But I love doing homemade gifts and this year I think, for my cousins, I'm going to do homemade bath salts and lotions. You can also make homemade facial masks and candles. The supplies are to expensive and you can get them either at the supermarket or an art supply store. For the older cousins I'm going to purchase some cheap but pretty tea cups from the Salvation army and turn them into aromatherapy candles. Or you can even make jewelery, I got some homemade jewelery from a friend for my birthday and it's one of my favorite pieces. I didn't even know it was homemade until I saw the parts at Michaels, it made the gift that more special.

Good luck. You can get through this season, broke or not, it's a beautiful time of year and you should enjoy it and not let the lack of money ruin this time for you. Plus you have a beautiful new home, a loving fiance and a healthy body, that's all you need!

I too had a season where I made my gifts. What I did was went to the christmas tree shop, bought a couple of xmas mugs, a little basket, $1.00 basket wrap then took a canning jar and placed cocoa and marshmallows in the canning jar. Prettied it up with a bow and then took a recipe card and wrote out how to make hot cocoa on a snowy day/night. Then I also went to the supermarket and got some gossip magazines placed those with the cocoa and viola a nice basket with love to help one pass their time on a snowy day. My friend LOVED it b/c it was unique and extremely thoughtful!!

Chica we are ALL in the "broke boat" as Happychick calls it. With Debt rising, Health care costs, unemployment etc, I find it hard that our loved ones wouldn't understand. How about homemade calendars? You can make for your sister and friends, family. look through old pictures with them in it, vacations together, pets, anything. You can get these from facebook to be undercover. You can have the calendars created on Vistaprint.com (1 calendar - $7.99 - free shipping on orders of $30) and I know there are several others out there too.

I'm pretty much in the same "broke boat" that you are. We're going to give out movie tickets that I'll get from AAA. a pack of 4 is 31 bucks (you have to buy them in the four pack but they can be separated once you get them). So if you have two couples to buy for..bam..15.50 each couple :) Good luck and congrats on the new house :)
