Injured runner needs motivation and inspiration

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

I am a runner as of 2008 and became a triathlete in 2009. I achieved my first goal of a 25 lb weight loss and completing my first sprint triathlon and 1/2 marathon at 45 years old. NOW the problem comes in, spring 2010- over-training caused a major hip/groin injury and my running days have been on hold since August 1, 2010. Needless to say I'm depressed and have packed on the lbs. Nov 30, 2010- I am facing the truth of a 10-14lb weight gain. I entered my current weight gain on my page in order to face reality and to figure out how I can get the weight off without running. Running was the magic key to speed up my metabolism and lose the lbs originally without it I face new opportunities. I sure would love to hear how other injured SparkPeople have lost weight despite their injuries. Thank you and God Bless!

Thank you all for your concern and suggestions. My swimming is also on hold because of my injury and walking has been too. I have my bicycle on a trainer and can't do any resistance either. I do yoga at home, as we don't have many classes in my town. I'm thinking about joining a gym temporarily getting out of the house workouts might be the key. I've never been a gym person, but it might be the time. Have a blessed day & thanks!

I have very bad knees so running is out of the question. I swim. It is a great total body workout and burns lots of calories. I also use the recumbent bike for cardio.

Your blog caught my attention because I am currently recovering from a sprained ankle. I can empathIize with you regarding the loss of routine & weight gain. Luckily I found this site during my resting time and have been able to track my food & stay motivated.
I am not even going to pretend to be a doctor. But I would think a personal trainer could assist you in getting in some cardio without running. Can you do swimming? Today I went back to my trainer and had an awesome upper body workout, including a lot of heavy bag work that really got me sweating!
Feel free to chat with me anytime. I will be watching for your progress.
    Cheers

Wow. That must be awful. I am not a runner - I dance for anything close to aerobic activity. But recently I went a tried hot yoga - that was a cool thing - it's very fast paced and you sweat a lot and most of the people in there who have been doing it a lot are toothpicks. So, if you are able to do stretching, that might be an option. I also find I burn quite a bit just walking - not sure if you can do low impact but it really works for me and certainly beats nothing for burning it off. Sending healing thoughts your way.
