I don't have asthma!

Friday, November 12, 2010

Good Morning,

I thought I'd drop a blog to let you know how my appointment went with the asthma doctor Thursday. Before I get into that I caught a cold on Monday so I am still getting over that. It made my week pretty interesting.

First off she was a great doctor and a really nice lady. We did a lot of joking around
and chit chatting. She listened to my whole three month story and wrote lots of stuff down. We then did a lung function test which I did fantastically on, even with my cold. Anything above 80% is good and I was at 105%. We then did an inebulizing mist to open up my air ways and see if things could be better. While I was breathing that in we talked about inhalers and the different types.

Next she checked my oxygen percent (through a clasp that reads it through my nail bed....) and I was doing really good there too.

Then back to the function test. My readings were pretty much the same as before, so I was still awesome!

So what does this mean? I do not have asthma, which is great. What probably happened was about three months ago I got an irritant in my lungs (could be viral, environmental or something else). My body's response to that was to make me cough. Well, I cough so hard that the openings in my lung get slammed shut over and over. It causes more irritation so the body keeps responding (more mucus, more coughing). There really is no direct way to tell what originally set me off but in order for my body to reset it needs about three months of me not coughing. So I will be on an inhaler (adviar) for another two months. She also gave me a rescue inhaler so that if I have a really bad coughing fit I can ease it before I do more damage and have to start over again. After that I should
be fine.

Good news for me!

Now i just need to get over this cold....

First off ~ GREAT news about the no asthma...however...yow on the 2 months of inhaler. So does this mean that you'll need to keep a low workout level for the next two months?

As for the tests...wow too...sounds like it was pretty intense. How long did it take? (I had the oxygen thing read though my finger once when I was in the hospital...technology is freakin awesome these days).

Anyway...so what's up for your weekend?
