The Soul of Music

"A lot of artists fall into a thing where they're constantly trying to create art, but I think you can forget to take things in. When I get home I put away the guitar and surf a lot. After a while, the songs just start comin'. It's not like some torturous process that I go through. - Jack Johnson
Ornette Coleman- Charlie Parker and Theloneous Monk - When you listen to their music, you hear such feeling in what they're doing. Emotion is far more interesting than technique. We're all working with the same notes and scales - it's what you do with them that counts.
There is a social quality to music. There is a relationship between music and society that's always been important. Use music in relationship to others.
Take the language of music and shape it into something positive and instructive - that's the spiritual side of music. Listening to music and EXPECTING it to sound a certain way based on their interpretation. I know all of the conventional things you're SUPPOSE to do in writing songs.
Music speaks to people in a different way. Music has nothing to do with race - it has no color. It does have something to do with culture, background and environment. Anhyone with an open heart and mind can play it and bring their own experience to it. The music we make together is really the essence of freedom.
