My first 5k

Sunday, November 07, 2010

Well, today was the big day. It didn't go as well as I was hoping but it wasn't awful.
I've been nervous about it for the past couple weeks because I had gotten sick 3 weeks ago and it went straight to my lungs. It has been making my asthma act up since then. (it usually takes FOREVER to get back to normal) So I knew that was going to be an issue.
Anyway, we woke up this morning to POURING rain. I live in WA State so the rain is usually no big deal but this was big rain! It was enough to have a little flooding in the parking lots! (I was happy I brought an extra pair of socks!) We (me, my husband and one of my cousins) got to the park the race is at and we walked around a little bit to warm up then went and sat in the truck with the heat for the worst of the rain. Can you believe that the rain STOPPED when we got up to the start line? There was even a double rainbow! No, it wasn't all the way and No, I don't know what it means. (LOL that's for those of you who have seen that the Youtube video! I'll never look at a rainbow the same. ) emoticon I just figured it was for me since it's also my bday! emoticon

So we start the race and other than being really cold I'm feeling really good! It was a pretty flat track. After about 10mins I could feel my lungs tightening up. I had given myself a point I wanted to make it too before I walked but I just couldn't make it. (I did make the first mile jogging though!) I'm a really competitive person and having to walk was killing me. Other than my breathing I felt good and knew I could do it. It was just so disappointing. :o( My inhaler wasn't working for me and I honestly thought for a little bit there I was going to need a paramedic. (it was kind of scary!) I pulled my shirt up over my nose and mouth to warm up the air I was breathing in and just slowed down my walk quite a bit. My husband is good about talking to me and getting my mind off of stuff so after about 5-10mins I was feeling MUCH better! I knew I couldn't jog anymore so my Hubby and I walked the rest of it. My cousin had gone up ahead. (after making sure I wasn't going to keel over) The Hubby and I cheered people on as they passed us on their way back to the finish line while we were walking. That was fun because i could tell a couple of the people really appreciated it. :o)
We did finish the last 1/4 mile jogging. :o) My mom, stepdad, cousin and her husband were there cheering us on at the finish line. It was not the best time (51:38) BUT it is a good time to beat at the next one and we weren't last! The people keeping track of the times had ours messed up pretty good. My hubby and I crossed the finish line at the same time, me just a tad ahead of him and somehow they had written on the boards I finished almost 2mins after him. lol
So yes, I'm bummed about how it went but I'm also proud of myself for doing it! It was fun, I'll definitely do more in the spring/summer when it's warmer out! The people who put on the event (our local Parks and Rec Department and the sponsors) did a really nice job! (other than the timing lol) They had lots of people posted along the route to cheer you on and the local police to stop traffic so we all could cross the roads. (we had to cross a major road here in town) They had a drink station at the halfway mark and gave out cups of water and at the end they had all kind of snacks for everyone. They even had drawings for door prizes! We didn't win anything dang it! lol :o) So yeah, that was our morning. It really was fun and I can now say I've done a 5k! I look forward to the next one! I can't wait to have some Birthday cake now! I think I earned it. emoticon

I look like crap (on the right) but oh well! lol

And we're off

Seriously, i did my first 5 k last month, and OMG....for a while i was THE last person. Then, about halfway through the race i had to stop and take off these extremely tight ankle braces, that added about 5 minutes to my time, and made me look ridiculous to the guy driving the "end" truck, and the volunteers. PLUS i ordered my shirt too small, so theres me...pulling my shirt down every 4 seconds, holding my ipod (i dont like the arm strap, but i SHOULD have used mine), two huge ankle braces, my keys, and my ids.....TRYING not to drop anything, and looking like a complete fool haha oh and i did the race alone hahaha either way, you did it! you finished something you said you wanted to do, and you know what....thats a great positive thing no matter what your time is. And you are so right...it just means you can improve so much more. Next time you wont be sick, and maybe the rain will hold off! Congrats on the finish :)

Happy Birthday and congratulations on getting out there and doing it. And doing it when you thought it was going to continue raining. A lot of people would have looked out the window and pulled the blanket over their head and said the weather's bad so I'm not going. But you fought over everything. When your breathing was difficult you could have dropped out and sat on the side for a while then walked back but you kept going. You finished it!! And yes, it does give you something to measure your progress as time goes on! emoticon
