An 'a-ha' moment in my closet

Sunday, October 31, 2010

I am always amazed that I never have anything to wear- yet my closet is jammed packed with clothes and shoes.

And I finally realized that I am a 'comfort shopper' to go along with my 'comfort eating'.

Whenever I am not feeling comfortable in my own skin- I shop. Purely impulse shopping- which results in trendy and sometime awkward purchases.

Here are some examples of impulse/comfort shopping items:

* A white denim jacket- that I have NEVER worn- but refuse to toss because I know one day I will find the perfect outfit to wear it with to the perfect occasion. (yeah, right)

*A cute pink twill jacket with ruffle accents. It's too cute- maybe 13 year old cute- but I can't part with it because....it's soooo cute!

*Several dresses that I wore when I was 75-80 lbs lighter. Inspiration dresses? Maybe. However, when I do fit in them again- they will be sooooo out of fashion. But hey, maybe by the time I fit in them again they will have come back into fashion?

*5 button down white shirts. One too long, one too tight, one too thin, one too short, one too froofie- yet every time I flip through the latest Coldwater Creek catalog- I have the overwhelming urge to buy another one.

So I am going to try to resist comfort shopping again- just go into my closet and shop there. Or better yet, I will try to be active- maybe clean out my closet- to get my mind on something else.
I hope to save my shopping trips to when I have to toss clothes because they are all too big. That is my goal!

I was thinking this week that it would be nice to have less clothes in the closet...and have everything fit! Don't you hate having clothes that you've never worn, and wonder why you bought them?

I really liked what you said. I am a Comfort Shopper too. I never thought of it that way!
I was out yesterday and put a long linen shirt and tailored brown vest on layaway. I am not sure if I will ever wear the long vest, but I liked it then.
I had been at a relatives' house that afternoon, and it was a "Duty" visit, this is not a nice person, and always has something to say about my size, looks, career, education and children. I have told her repeatedly to stop, express my boundaries, and limit my time with her, but she does not respect anything that I say.
I went from this visit to the store, where I tried on many things and decided on those two items.
How interesting, Thank you for helping me see the relationship between these two actions!
I think that I will go back and cancel the layaway on Monday.
