Signed up for my first race

Friday, October 22, 2010

So I've stated (here, to friends, my son, etc.) that I have set a goal of running a 5k. I decided yesterday that I want to run my first 'race' this year. I came across a site that lists tons of information on races of all sorts all over the state. (Google Run Georgia if you are interested...) I wanted to find something on a weekend morning, relatively close to home. I signed up for a 2 mile run for Dec. 11th. Not a 5k, but its a start.

There is a 5k that starts @ 1:50 am on November 7th. Called the Impossible 5k. Its impossible because runners finish with a negative time. Start @ 1:50am, time goes 'back' an hour @ 2:00am for Daylight Savings Time, and so you finish before your start time. Thought that was really clever - but its just 2 weeks away. I have not yet gone the 3.1 mile distance, so was afraid to sign up for that one. Last night I went for 23 minutes/1.8 miles, and I'm adding 1 minute with each run. (Every other day that is...)

There is another I MIGHT go for - on T'giving morning. 5 weeks to train. Maybe? I KNOW I can do the 2 mile on Dec. 11th. Doing my first 5k in just over a month sounds a little intimidating but I'm not ruling it out.

Hi Staci...I noticed that you are on the rookie running group too, and thought I would stop by your blog! Congrats on tackling the bootcamp and the title of "runner"! Isn't it funny that we hesitate to call ourselves runners? I feel the same way. Please be encouraged to think about the 5K! You can really do more than you realize, and it's okay to even walk part of it. The feeling of accomplishment and pride as you cross the finish line will inspire you greatly. I will be doing a 5K Turkey Trot in Colorado! Your 2 mile run is a great idea to install that confidence too.

Hope your bootcamp is going great!

I know a bunch of folks that are going to the impossible 5K. I could not be convinced that running at 2am was a good idea. LOL! I did, however, sign up for the Turkey Trot in Marietta on tday. I'm in for the 10K.

    Good luck with your training.
