I need to have a rant...

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Right, here goes.

I am co-chairperson of the Kent Ferret Club in the Uk and we are currently organising a x-mas show.

I have been hunting for weeks trying to find a decent venue for the show, I had sent emails to the other people (Clive & Suz) who are involved in the show about potential venues and not received one reply back. I then see on our shared forum (shared with other people) that they have been talking to other people about venues and that they have agreed to hold a joint show with a rescue. Nice of them to tell me, they even put in the post that they had not spoken to me about it yet! I was slightly taken aback by this but let it go!

Then I pulled together the newsletter and sent that over to them to review and in the meantime they then told me that they had sorted the joint show and that the date was 11th December 2010. So I amended the newsletter to reflect this news and once sorted I started working on other things for the show. I sort out the sponsorship and prizes etc and I sent them a few emails about various things.

They posted the dates on the forum saying that they would be needing some helpers on the day etc... Which is great. So today I posted a notification of the show on our facebook page.

One of the regulars on the site then cross posted it on another forum and Clive has had a right pop at it saying that the venue had only been penciled in, not confirmed. He asked who had posted it on Facebook so I said it was me and that as it was announced on the forum I assumed that the venue was actually confirmed. Seems bloody stupid to me! I said that I can remove the posts if need be and he said we need to slow it down!!!!

If they told me where we were at there would not be any confusion, I feel like telling them to stuff it - although I enjoy it! I am just slightly miffed, not sure whether I am over-reacting or not but feel a bit annoyed!

Sorry, just needed to let off.

I would rightfully annoyed. The executive body of any organization should be communicating regularly, ESPECIALLY when your org is holding an event. Do you typically communicate via e-mail, or on a special board in your forum? I would tell them about your disappointment with being left out of the planning. I would say that "I've been e-mailing you all and not received a reply back. I'm scouring for venues, and yet here you are discussing them as if you've made a concrete decision - a decision you note that you haven't informed ME of." It's absolutely LAZINESS on their part to not contact you. They're on the computer as it is, and just can't be arsed to open their e-mail client. Or perhaps this firewalling on their part reflects their feelings about your role in the planning committee? Either way, having been in planning roles for organizations in the past, I understand how hurtful and damaging side-chatter and miscommunication & secrecy can be. I hope it gets better.

lack of communication is a problem everywhere. one hand doesn't know what the other one is doing. it makes extra work for lots of people like yourself. i would be very upset if it were me. maybe you should tell them to stuff it or just do the ranting, take a deep breath, and ignore the ignorance.
