2010 Bisbee 1000, my second time

Sunday, October 17, 2010

The difference this year made was not the difference I was expecting. I expected to be all gung ho and maybe moving like a real runner. Instead, this year the race felt harder and I finished 10 minutes slower than last year. My strained calf muscle and two week hiatus was not helpful. The Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb is a 5K race with an ADDITIONAL 1034 stairs (that's 34.5 flights although the stairs are in 9 sets, the longest being 131 stairs). I am weeks away from being 58 years old and it took me 1 hour, 27 minutes to complete the course, which squeaked me into the top half of my age group.

Last year after the race I blogged that I would have my first winter of "fitness" and have to figure out what that would look like. Now I know.

It looked like joining an aerobics class with women mostly my age (some younger; some in their 60s and 70s). I went from being the least able most arrhythmic white girl in the class to someone who can do the grapevine to Springsteen and hold the plank to Lady Gaga. Didn't see that coming!

It looked like getting up earlier Saturday morning and walking half the course with the Girlfriend and some co-workers and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast. The Bisbee 1000 became something we did on Saturdays! Will walk for bagels!

My weight has fluctuated over the year. I did the race yesterday six pounds lighter than last year, although 3 pounds heavier than my goal weight. But I did not revert to recliner girl. Someone at work referred to me as "fit." Me!

I carried the names of my Spark Buddies on the inside of my shirt (you know who you are) and today I want to reiterate my gratitude. During the race I was passed by a couple whose shirts proclaimed: "Friends keep you going." If they only knew! Spark Friends may not make me the fastest; but they brought me the furthest.

AWESOME! My hubby did it for the first time, and now we are BOTH going to sign up for 2011! I think I've also convinced a SparkBuddy (LINDAKAY228) to do it as well, so maybe we can get a group of us together there this year!!!

I think you look fabulous!! Congrats on completing the race for a second time. Sometimes our results aren't what we want (I went through that with my second 5k last year), but the important thing is that you're still moving foward - which you are!!

I love that you carried names in your shirt - what a great motivator and way to remind yourself how far you've come and all the support you have!

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and everything will shake out just fine :)

    WOW-what an impressive accomplishment!
Who would ever have thought that recliner girl would become such an athalete?
I am so happy for you and proud of you and appreciate that you gave us, your adoring fans, a peek into your world and a look at your adorable, slim, youthful face.
    Sorry- am I gushing?
    I don't mean to gush.
    I can't help myself.

I am so proud of you!!! You inspire me. Simply doing the Bisbee 1000 2 years in a row shows what a huge distance from the lady formerly known as Recliner Deb you have come.

You look much younger than 57! Beautiful - from the inside out!!

Keep up the great work Deb. All we can do is make the best choices we can for today - then repeat. I think you are doing great!

One of my favourite ever SP blogs was one where you wrote about putting the donut down and exercising.

    Well you certainly did that!

    Big congrats! Well done.
