Weight Loss has changed my life

In 2008 if someone would have told me what my life would be like in 2010 I would have laughed in their face. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe I would ever feel this happy and have this much pride in myself.
In 2007 I weighed 252 pounds and I was immensly unhappy with how I looked and how I felt. My decision to attempt to loose weight began when I was shopping that December for a pair of jeans to wear over the holidays. I got very emotional when I discovered that a 40" waist no longer fit me. Then and there in the store I swore to myself that I was going to make a change.
I made such small changes to the food I ate and when I saw that number on the scale getting smaller it pushed me to make more changes and keep the results coming. Simple things like switching full fat milk to low fat, no mayo, brown bread instead of white, baked foods not fried, diet soda in place of regular.
A month into my new lifestyle I decided to attempt something I had always feared, EXERCISE! I decided to ditch the bus home from work once a week and I walked the 4 miles home. The number on that scale kept dropping and I was feeling great. My exercise increased as I pushed my new body and discovered new limits. I was enjoy exercise and soon felt enough confidence in my body to join a gym. My eating habits changed again. As I began to research different foods online I came across Spark People. I ditched diet sodas and anything that had no nutritional value and kept them only as a special treat.
One year after my journey began I was down 50 pounds. Friends and family where shocked at how different I looked and how much happier and full of life I was. Everone wanted to know 'my weightloss secret'. I tried to give people tips on healthy eating and exercise but I told them there is no secret or quick cure. You can't just want to loose weight or get healthy, you have to do the work to achieve it. I noticed a big change in myself. I would regularly have a grin from ear to ear when I would get compliments about how well I looked. I never received compliments like that and it felt great. I wanted other people to experience this great feeling I have had since starting my new lifestyle. This feeling of achievement and pride. The feeling of having a new body and having a new outlook on life. I wanted to share 'my secret' (diet and exercise) on a professional level so in 2009 I decided to quit my full time job and get a qualification as a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. As of October 2010 I am 6 months away holding my qualification and I cannot wait to help people who were just like me 3 years previously.
I am reflecting on my journey today of all days because today I completed my first 5K. Running past that finish line was like finally reaching the top of a mountain I had been struggling up all my life and I did it! My journey continues and I am not yet at my goal weight but I know I will get there because I have the education from my training course and encouragment from like minded people here at Spark People. It hasn't always been an easy journey up that mountain, there were falls along the way but I dusted myself off and continued on because I didn't want to fall to the bottom again. Never underestimate yourself, work towards your goal, take small steps, enjoy the journey and you WILL get there.
