9/23/10--Stress Busters: Week 1
Thursday, September 23, 2010
I am having a good week so far! There is the usual stress at work, but I am working on reducing that. In fact, yesterday I wrote a paper for class about stress in the workplace and came up with a plan to reduce it and handle it when it occurs. I face the problem of having to get two departments sized and straightened at closing, and I don't have a lot of time to do it, so I usually get REALLY stressed out. Also during the day, I have about 5 million things I have to be doing at once (and this is before all the interruptions of customer phone calls, pages for help, and assisting at the registers!), so I get really stressed during the day too. Some of the key things I am going to try to do if I get stressed at work are: 1)To not be a perfectionist...I can't expect perfection and still get everything done!, 2)Not be afraid to ask for help if I get way behind, 3)Visualize myself working quickly and getting done with everything on time (which will hopefully inspire and motivate me to do so), 4)Look back on all I have gotten done with pride rather than dwell on all that's still left to do, and 5)Talk about my frustrations with my manager to vent and to recieve helpful feedback or suggestions. I am also using my lunch break to eat my lunch and read a book that I bring with me so I can escape and relax during it instead of sitting there thinking about what still needs done. It really helps to have this "me" time in the middle of work.
I mentioned earlier this week that I planned out my homework schedule for the semester. It looks like I can get done with all of my homework long before the semester ends if I do a little bit each day, which will give me time to relax a little and get other things done towards the end. I am feeling very optimistic about this and hope I can stick to it!
I am hoping to find more time to exercise too, as that usually helps me feel good and more relaxed. I plan to go for as many walks as possible while it's still nice outside. Once I can get my boyfriend to hook up his treadmill for me, I wil be able to use that too. I will definitely make use of it this winter! With odd work hours and my homework, I can't really keep a set exercise schedule, so it's hard for me to get motivated to get out and exercise on my own. I really, really need to work on this if I want to lose more weight! Today I think I will dance some calories off and then do some strength training, which I haven't done in forever.
