Small Steps

I lost a friend this week. A former neighbor, 6 years younger than I , kind, generous, caring and overweight... to a heart attack. When I met Penny we were walking our dogs. I had noticed her each morning as I readied for work. I got in the habit of meeting her for their evening walk. We both lived alone and had much in common.

After a couple of years, Penny decided to quit walking. Her dog was older and she thought it was too much for him. We still talked over the back fence, then I moved away and our friendship dwindled to Christmas cards. When I heard the news from Penny's sister, she said that she was looking for a home for the dog.

We need to keep moving, we need to stick with the Spark program of healthy eating and exercise. Maybe when you least feel like getting off the couch is when you MOST need to. Just stand up, shake out your legs, do a couple of stretches. Then if you feel like it, do a couple more. Walk to the end of your driveway, or block, just something small today, maybe a little more tomorrow.

If you can't seem to give up your treats, cut them in half. One or two bites of cake is better than a slice ( or the whole thing ). Make that sandwich openface, you won't even notice that it's one piece of bread. Must have ice cream? Ride your bike to get it. It doesn't matter what you do, just DO some little thing. Do it for yourself and those who love you, and do it for your Spark friends too !

I'm sorry you lost your friend. I don't imagine you would mind me lighting a candle for her and her family as well as one for you, would you?

Annette,I'm sorry for the loss of your friend... I read a quote somewhere that said something about it's not death that's so sad, it's what dies within us while we live... That's not an exact quote, and I can't remember who said it, but it struck me as so true. I'm sure you were a blessing in her life. You're a blessing in mine...

    with gratitude --

I'm so sorry you lost your friend, Annette... Isn't it amazing how, over a period of time, we realize we're exercising more and making different eating choices, too? I'm so sorry to hear that Penny's sister is now having to find a home for her sad... - Sandi emoticon
