It all started Wednesday evening when Pagona called me. "hey, let's take Melissa and hike with her at Mt. Baldy!" (Melissa did Mt. Whiteny w/ us last year. She's from Seattle & was coming in for the long weekend). "I haven't trained Pagona. I can't do that." "oh sure you can. You're in good shape," says Pagona. Well, as we're talking, I'm getting more excited. I told her I had to check w/ DH & I'd get back to her. Went over to DH, leaned over and asked, "Jonathan, can I hike Mt. Baldy on Sunday?" "Sure, why not?" YEAH!! Called Pagona back and we made plans. The rest of the days were the same as usual.
Sunday morning, my alarm went off at 5:20. Got up, went to the bathroom, got dressed and was in the kitchen by 5:35. Ate some breakfast & finished packing my backpack. I got the call at 6:00 from Pagona that they were passing Rocky Peak. Hopped in the car & met them on the freeway. And, we were off. We made good timing, but we had to make a pit stop. We got to the parking lot, got ourselves ready & we were off by 7:55. But first, here's a picture of the 3 of us:
And, up we went to the fire road. We wanted to take Melissa the same way we went the first time, but we couldn't find the trail. They don't mark anything. So, we turned around and went the way we came down last time. Pagona and I decided that we were glad the last time we came the weather was bad and we couldn't see what was in front or on the side of us. It was kind of scarey. We made awesome time to the top. Melissa was in the zone and was hauling butt up that mountain. We were behind her and very content in our pace. It was so windy that I lost my hat. By the time I turned around to try to get it, it was gone. Didn't even see any yellow. Loved that hat!! Made it to the top by 11:30 (I think). Someone took a picture of me at the top, but for some reason, it didn't come out. But, here's one with all of us at the top:
We ate some snack, rested for a little & then, we were on our way. Our goal was to go back the same way we came up last time. We were headed for the green hut. Well, off we went. We're going down hill, nice pace & I needed a potty break. found a "bathroom" and had to ask a couple to wait. They weren't too happy, but, oh well. We started talking to them and realized, we were going on the wrong trail. See, they didn't mark them at all! If we would have continued on that trail, we would have gone 7 miles and it would have taken us to the village. Then, we would have to hitch a ride back up 3 1/2 miles to our cars. Or, we could turn around and find the right trail. What did we do? Turned around and went back. More uphill elevation. Oh so fun!! It took us 45 minutes which was really good. Found the right trail and we were on our way to the green hut. A lot of rocks to climb down and over. But, there it was, the GREEN HUT:
Took a potty break and we were on our way. We made amazing time on the way down. Basically, we just made amazing time. It took us 7 hours to hike 15.4 miles. Last year, we did less miles (because we didn't get lost!), took us more time & we ended up taking the ski lift down because it was getting late. All in all, it was a great hike. It was so nice being with my buddies again. And, they were so proud of me because I drank ALL of my water this time!! We ate a little snack and then, we went on our way. I got home around 5:15, took a quick shower & then, the whole family went to my brother's house for a visit. I was exhausted, but I was able to socialize. It was fun telling everyone all about my adventure.
Got home and we watched a movie. I was so tired, that I just couldn't get into it. So, I went to bed instead. Read a little & then, lights out. Didn't put the alarm on or anything.
When I woke up Monday morning, my legs were a bit stiff. My calves and quads hurt the most. DH asked if I wanted to go bike riding w/ him and our son. I told him I was just going to take a walk. Got dressed, put on my ipod and off I went. Well, let's just say that my walk truned into a 4 mile run. I just started and didn't stop. Not sure how smart that was, but I felt good. The rest of the day was crazy busy (as to why this blog is so late). Shopped, cooked, cleaned and hosted. 2 families came over at 4:30 for dinner: steak, salmon, beet salad, green salad, wild rice & brushetta. For dessert, DH & I made whoopie pies. Not my liking. Way too chocolately. The filling was good, though! The last family didn't leave until 10:00. can you say EXHAUSTED? (Oh, btw, my oldest son came home for dinner and to do his laundry!)
It was a great, long weekend. Wouldn't have changed a thing. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I will post again tomorrow about my Tuesday and Wendesday.
