First rant is about cardio again. Rather than subject anyone to my well known personal opinion I will direct everyone to an abstract of a research study on the topic of cardio and fat loss. studio4romtech.com/PDF%2

Next rant is about the misleading "fitness workouts" pm FITTV. Yesterday I watched one which had five size 2 twenty something prancing and dancing in a workout that was a choreographed as something done by the Radio City Rockettes. Yes it was entertaining but I doubt any average non dance trained person larger than a size 5 could follow along. Gilad talks about " longer leaner you" and "sculpt your body into the one you always wanted" which are nice but meaningless catch phrases. The "Israeli Stud Muffin" and his dancers did not get those bodies doing those workouts. You will benefit from the workouts if you can maintain the pace but not become "a leaner longer you", leaner perhaps but length is a fixed measurement once you stop growing. The concept of "House Calls" and Body Challenge" are good however the workouts seem to fly in the face of current research with regard to they way they are structured. I personally believe that better results could be obtained with better programmes based on the current research.

Ruminations: why does FITTV put a low fat and a low carb cooking show back to back? Sam the Cooking guy and Lyon in the Kitchen are great shows for cooking tips but neither mentions anything about nutrition. I know it is marketing and designed to provide a platform for advertisers but how many take the information as a way to eat well.

When it comes to getting fit and healthy and maintaining it KISS works. keep it simple student (deliberate but uncommon attempt at being PC here) is the best way for people to approach their workout programmes.

    Hmmmmm, that's a pretty tiny sample population - any links with a larger research base?

    Not that I question the results - I'm pretty much of the same opinion myself (just from knowing the difference in how I *feel* after some high intensity circuit training, or after Zumba OMG, vs. just walking).

    There *are* exercises that promote "long" muscles vs "short" muscles (I read about a cerebral palsy patient who had to choose between swimming and horseback riding as activities, because they were working at cross-purposes in terms of her muscle development), but yeah...most of it is generally marketing gimmicks. Meh.

    Thanks for the link to that abstract. I had noticed I was getting better results back when I was doing P90X than when I just walked every day, even at a good clip. I'm going to take your advice and push myself to the max during workouts. I'll PM you with the results.

    I think that is why I like the biggest loser workouts, they are real people and even they are doing it wrong sometimes. I don't have to watch someone doing it and think I'm never going to look like that, because honestely I look better then some of the people in the workout video. It really helps me because I know if they can do it so can I. Good luck finding what works for you. I have never watched fittv.
