I start off strong...

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

My mornings feel so productive, but after lunch I feel the slump setting in. I start out with my cardio which could include walking, running, cycling or swimming. That makes me feel so good, like I could move mountains and tackle any challenge the day puts before me.

Since I work at home - although that could change after my job interview on Thursday - I am very flexible. Which is the best benefit this job offers. I can get busy when that slump starts by moving - doing laundry, housework, mow the grass if the hot Florida sun is not too intense - so I have been able to work around this daily cycle. Of course when business was better I barely felt the slump because my work kept me focused and moving and active, even if it was only mentally. Business has been slow which is why I finally started applying for outside work, part time so that I can still do my own business when it ever picks up again.

But food - the afternoon slump includes time to eat! NOT GOOD! So I really need to keep busy with something to keep my hands from putting food into my mouth. I really do eat more when I find myself idle.

Goals for today -

refer to that TO DO LIST i make each morning - get another task done
prepare a healthy dinner - oops that's already on the list.
brush my shaggy dog - he needs it.
start that weight lifting routine I keep telling myself I will start
Track every morsel I eat

which is how i got started on this blog - do 60 grams of Wheat thins really cost 310 calories?
It looks like only salad for dinner - emoticon

okay - I am outta here. Got a dinner to prep! Dogs to brush! Food to not eat!

Oh I hear you on this. I think working at home would be a big challenge. I notice I struggle with this on the weekend just because I'm home and near food most of the time and usually am not nearly as busy. I've been trying to find a solution to this one too. I think keeping busy is key.

I know when I am in am in that position and I feel like I want to eat, I will make a cup of tea. I have been drinking green tea lately and it has been helping me get through those times when I am not hungry, but just want to eat. I then realize that the feeling will pass and I won't want to eat anymore. Maybe all you need is some afternoon tea :)

At the gym I just joined, they had a Jump Start program where we talked with a trainer about our goals and whatever, and he addressed that afternoon "slump." the way he described it was that there are three factions to losing and maintaining weight - strength, cardio, and nutrition. When the 3 are actually in balance, which is rare and it seems that when you do get it balanced your body changes and it doesn't last long, that afternoon slump won't happen. So maybe change something up, like you know it works when you add more cardio, maybe change what you're eating or the times you're eating.
