3 mile race - 1st in my age group
Saturday, August 28, 2010
You read that right, FIRST in my age group. The fact that there were only 51 people who ran this race and there were only 3 women in the 50-54 age group does not detract from the fact that my time of 36:23.67 was a WINNER!!
My daughter and I have competed in various walking/running events over the past 5 months so when the local county fair board decided to host a race to kick off the 161st county fair, we decided to participate. Rather than a course through city streets or a local park, this race was run at the fairgrounds on the 1/2 mile track usually used for horses. So we had to run 6 laps.
Several factors could have contributed to the low number of runners:
1. The cross country season has started at local high schools so that eliminated the teenage running crowd plus their coaches (usually adult runners) and their parents.
2. This was the first year for this event. Even though the county fair has been around forever, this is the first year for the race.
3. There was another running event being held this evening within a half-hour's drive so that may have eliminated some runners who didn't want to do both.
But no matter what outside factors contributed to my success - I am proud of my first place gold medal. Plus we had fun!!!!
