My trip to Vermont

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Just got back from a great vacation to Burlington, VT. I bought a TomTom for myself last year at Christmas and thought I would put it to the ultimate test and it was great. Left on Saturday morning (8/21) and had a nice drive. The weather was great and not alot of traffic on the road. It took us about 8h 30m to get to Kent, NY for the ferry across Lake Champlain. They were loading the ferry when we got there but there was not enough room for my car so we had to wait for an hour for the next ferry. Then it takes an hour to cross the lake once you get on the ferry. We finally got checked into our room at 4:30 that afternoon. Our room looked out over the lake and the sunrises and sunsets on the lake were beautiful.

My mom and my aunt went with me and we went to see their younger sister who is in an assisted living residence there. My cousin lives in VT and he brought his mom up to live near him when she started showing signs of dementia. The residence where she lives is beautiful and the staff are just wonderful. Last year she was moved to the secure section of the residence when her dementia worsened. We spent four days in Vermont and went and visited my aunt every day. She did not remember who we were but that was ok with us. We would remind her and just engage her in conversation. She really looks great and is otherwise in great health. She no longer likes to leave the residence so on Sunday's my cousin brings his wife and two little girls and they go visit. The girls are a great treat to the residents there and they sit and color with their grandma.

If my mom is up to it next year and wants to go again I will take her. She is having some health problems of her own and she also is showing early signs of dementia. Her doctor has tried her on medication but it just made her sick so she won't take it. So if she wants to go see her sister the least I can do is take her. Maybe next time I can get my brother and sister to go along. My cousin and I talked alot about his mom and my mom and we gave each other alot of support. I can see the road that my mom may go down but I am thankful that I will have my sister and brother to help me and support me. My cousin has a brother and his brother can not come to grips with his mothers condition so he basically stays away. Thankfully my cousins wife is so supportive, she is such an awesome person and they are so happy together. So maybe another trip to Vermont will be in the future. I just treasure each day that I have with my mom because the future is so fickle.

What a blessing you are to your mother. You are a great daughter too. Appreciate the time you can spend making memories that you will cherish. All families are not like that. It is heartwarming to know that some still care about each other.
Vermont is gorgeous and especially in the summer.

Sounds like a wonderful time and you're right about aging parents. It seems to come with the territory and having been thru what you're facing, just cherish each and every moment. Life is never the same once they're gone.

Take care and give your mama a hug for me!!
