The Smell of Gasoline
Sunday, August 22, 2010
Today after my helluva run I decided to do the rainy Sunday thing and head to the mall. Got some new clothes for the new job. With some great 'back to school' sales going on. Alls good.
Then I went to Chapters for a couple of hours to hang out, grab a Starbucks cookie and chillax before I went home. While I was wandering around I came across a book called "The Book of Awesome". Its simply a list of the small things in life that we really don't notice for anything longer than two seconds, but are so good and comforting or happy-fying or AWESOME at the time. It just made me realize that when we come across these small things, we should observe and feel them, take them for what they are. We get so wrapped up in all of daily to-do lists to really slow down and 'smell the gasoline' (one of my favorite AWESOME things). Why are we in a rush so much? Why don't we realize that if we don't get that final mile in now, we can get it in later? I guess this is kind of a 'don't sweat the small stuff' idea, but reading the list of AWESOME things made me realize that I need to be more aware and just be.
Here are a few of my favorites from the list: (from www.1000awesomethings.com - its an ongoing list, currently ending at #435)
1. Locking people out of the car and pretending to drive away
2.When you pull to a red light and the guy in front of you nudges up a bit so you can make a right turn
3.Sleeping in new bed sheets
4.Living with someone who doesn't mind killing spiders
5.Finally getting a piece of popcorn that’s been stuck in your teeth all day out
6. Getting a trucker to blow their horn (a fave as kids - it made our day!)
7. Having a whole row by yourself on the plane (this was the best on an overnight from L.A. to Toronto)
8.Taking your shoes and socks off after a really long day
9.Taking your bra off after wearing it for hours (now THIS is AWESOME)
10. The other side of the pillow
.... and the list goes on.
KNow what was AWESOME today? I bought a book, that looks really good, for TWO bucks! Beat that!
But the most awesome thing is the softness of Pepper and Cricket's hair/fur. So warm and cuddly.
So, next time when you're all frustrated, and the boss /wife / husband / kids tick you off, its snowing, the microwave just died...... just take off your bra.
