My First 10K!! - 1:09:01.9 (it all counts!)

Another one down.

Today was my first 10K, I hadn't even reached 10K in training runs, which is why I've been nervous this week. Thankfully it wasn't sunny, but it was hot and humid, but I"ll take that over sun any day!

Surprisingly, I didn't find it too bad. Of course, the further I went the tougher it became, but the adrenaline did help. Though it was a small race (199 participants) and we were spread out quite a bit, especially in the second 5K, I felt the encouragement of other racers - just knowing they were there. There was one participant during the final kilometer that talked me into not stopping for a rest. He was in his cool down, he told me, while I was huffing and puffing my way along! He did eventually leave me in the dust but without him it would have taken me a bit longer to get to the finish.

Funny thing was, a friend was supposed to meet me at the finish with my camera for photos, but we had a miscommunication, and she wasn't there. Turns out, she was at the actual festival grounds looking for me, about 5 minutes away! But we did catch a couple of photos afterwards! And there might be some from the race itself put up in about a day or so. (I think their photographer was my photography instructor last summer!)

So yes, as my title states, I finished at 1:09:01. It would have been quicker, but I had a couple of 30 sec - 1 min walking breaks. Not quite as fantastic as our fearless leader, and no medal for me! but I was happy with it. I heard it was a good time.... I was placed 175 of 199. (not great, but...)

My next race is a month from now, in Ottawa for 5K. Its in support of the Canadian Army and the military families. Then another 10K in October (trying for a time less than an hour). I'm going to try to fit in another two before the year is out.

    This is awesome! Isn't that just like Sparking to have that guy talk you through a tough part of the race. So, what distance are you going to run in Kansas City?

    Congrats on your first 10K! YOU WERE ROCKING IT! This is the first of many! Look you already got the next 10K planned! Success is finishing! At least you were not 199 of 199! And why did you not stretch afterwards little lady?! Hmmm...

    Great Job! I look forward to the day I can get back to jogging and work towards a 10k. It's been years since I was able to do that. ABout 25 more pounds off and the 'ol knees may be able to take it. Congratulations and keep setting higher goals. I have always believed running is the very best way to take of weight and stay in shape.

    Sounds like it was a good day for a great run and you made the BEST of it!! Your pace was fairly quick as well girl, all in all....i'd say YOU KILLED IT!!!
