Prep for Half Marathon

Saturday, August 07, 2010

Hi SPers! My 10k a couple of weeks ago was such fun - way more fun than a 5k. I felt like I had time to really enjoy it.... and I finished in 59:22. I was hoping for under an hour and there it was. Perfect weather, flat course, lots of encouragement from family. Loved it!!

Anyway, next on my plate is a half marathon! My friend and I have been training for several months now, and did a long run today of 8 miles. Actually, we did run/walk intervals of 8 minutes running and 1 minute walking. Jeff Galloway recommends shorter running intervals than that but after working so hard to run without stopping it is hard to wrap our heads around walking intentionally. Does anyone out there use his system?

The walk breaks definitely help us keep gas in the tank though, and my knee appreciates them as well. We also started experimenting with fueling on the run. We had chocolate GU with caffeine today: consisteny was weird, flavor was good, but my running partner had a crampy afternoon! I got several things to try and would love to hear suggestions.

I also bought a fuel belt and used it for the first time today. Easy to get to fluids and GU, but annoying to get belt positioned well at first. Not sure if I will use it in the race or just fuel at water stops. Definitely need it for long training runs. Again, suggestions appreciated!!

Happy Saturday everybody!!
