Woman's World (Day 1)
Monday, August 02, 2010
I decided that each day I would write one thing that I liked in an article from Woman's World magazine. Hopefully others will find it interesting as well. Today's post will be from this week that is on stands until August 9th with Dr.Oz on the cover.
So I have started cooking and I love using different spices in meals. This week I found an article on the positive effects of different spices and herbs.
Black Pepper: Helps you digest food more easily. It's main alkaloid, piperine, stimulates the production of protective acids in the stomach that stave off heartburn and indigestion. It also stimulates digestive enzymes that help break down foo in the body, and some studies suggest it cam even prevent stomach ulcers and digestive cancers.
*Don't like pepper? You can find piperine as a supplement in health-food stores.
Bay Leaf: Stop pain with bay leaf. If yoou are prone to headaches, adding a couple of bay leaves to your marinades and rice dishes may help you stay pain free: The leaves contain parthenolides compounds that block a pain-causing chemical in the body called COX-2, as well as eugenol, an anti-inflammatory proven to reduce pain and swelling by 30%. Bay leaves also prevent blood clots and may protect you from diabetes: They've been shown to regulate insulin, lowering blood-sugars.
Cinnamon: Ease PMS with cinnamon! A natural anti-inflammatory, cinnamon inhibits the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause menstrual cramps. And the mere scent is proven to reduce the irritability, fatigue and mood swings associated with PMS. Just sprinkle a few teaspoons on dessert, toast or your iced coffee to the the relaxing benefit, or have a glass of cinnamon tea (try it iced!) .
Those are it for now, there are a few more, but my hands hurt from writing at this moment. I have Turmeric, Garlic, Sage, and Celery Seed left if you are interesting in their benefits I will post it ! Thanks everyone !
