Fitness during pregnancy

Monday, August 02, 2010

UPDATE: 8/2/10 --- Since becoming pregnant, it's been very difficult for me especially with the fitness department. I hear from lots of people that fitness is very important and then I hear from others don't do too much while pregnant.

When I was pregnant with my son the first pregnancy, I remember I did not bother to exercise, I tried, I had some pregnancy books that talked about exercise & even showed how to do them, but I didn't keep up with it. At that time I didn't realize how important fitness truly was for me. Then I had son and gained and gained A LOT of weight, I don't think it was until I was at my highest weight that I realized I needed to do something.

With this pregnancy, even though fitness has been very hard for me this time around to, what with being sooo tired all the time. I've finally gotten it into my head that I NEED the fitness, no matter what. I know that in the first trimester it's usually harder anyway to exercise period and I know it's "ok", but I don't want to allow myself to become the same person I was when I was pregnant with my son. I WILL not allow myself to go back there.

It's taken me several weeks, and slowly but surely I've started to workout. First started on just the exercise bike only once a week though, not much. Then yesterday I had the feeling I NEED to get some sort of exercise in, so my son & I took a walk. Today, we both did some exercises, I started out with some exercises from on BabyFit. Then I was doing some stretches and he comes in and wants to exercise with me, so he did some stretches and some other little exercises. He keeps saying he wants to keep exercising, which is different for him, lol. Maybe with him wanting to exercise I will be able to keep up a regimen of exercise daily. Wish me luck! So for the month of August, even though we will be moving, I plan to up my exercise little by little.

When I was pregnant I did water aerobics, walking and calisthenics. That really helped when the time came to deliver.

Even just taking daily walks is a great way to get your exercise in. It isn't realistic to expect to be at the same level you've been at! You are soooo tired! But try to go for a walk, at a minimum. You'll be so happy you did after the birth. It will be so much easier to get the extra weight off, since you'll already be in the swing of it.
