A co-worker told me my pedometer was useless and that I won't lose weight! HA...HA to him!

Saturday, July 31, 2010

I love people who think they know it all. I started a new job about a month ago and had lost well over 60 lbs. at that point so no one knew how overweight I was last year. Well this past week I had my pedometer like I do any other day but it was noticeable that I was wearing it. Anyway, a coworker asked why I wear it and I told him it keeps me motivated to do at least 10,000 steps a day and whatever I'm short by the time I get home I walk the additional amount. Well he told me that was useless unless I was jogging and that there is NO WAY I will ever lose weight that way. I laughed at him and said that's funny cause I've already lost about 65 LBS mostly through walking!

Well, that took him back a little as he couldn't believe it and actually asked me did I really lose that much weight...and I said yes. Rather than congratulate me, he had to make what he said right and then proceeded to tell me in a very unkind way that "obviously you must have been eating like a pig cause there is no way you can lose that much weight walking". I followed that up with that I actually eat more now and eat 3 times a day and several snacks a day and that I have the occasional slice of pizza and cup of ice cream as well!

Needless to say he changed the subject and left my office. He actually helped motivate me more to want to walk as much as I can this weekend, rather than take it as an insult (as I don't like be called a pig") and end up feeling sorry for myself.

However, on a serious note, had I just been starting out my program, something like this probrably would have derailed me and make me give up, but in this case my weight loss numbers were there to prove it. I was even at my doctors office last week and in the last 7 months since I hadn't been there it showed the significant amount of weight I lost and asked me what I was doing and how I did it and I told them and they told me I am right on track for weight loss and that I am very healthy and were happy to hear that I was doing it the right way and even went as far as to write down the sparkpeople website.

So the moral of the story, if the pedometer works for me and my 10,000 steps a day works for me I'm sticking to it. At least it keeps me off the couch and moving.

I have a pedometer but never used it. You convinced me to put it on. The one I have was from the dollar store. Do you recommend a particular brand? Is one type more accurate then another?
Congrats on your weightloss and your future weightloss.

People can be tough consider looking for the book The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense by Susan Elgin. She has written a series of books on how to deal with this issue and how not become part of the problem. The best of luck I have had the same issue had to put a stop to it.

Sometimes people say things because they want the excuse to work for them, sometimes to keep you in your place. Don't let them

That was just breathtakingly unkind. Seriously, who acts like that?!?

Congratulations on keeping your cool. Just remember, slow and steady weight loss is the only kind that STAYS off, and keep doing what you're doing.

Most people would have either lashed out or just turned inward and stewed after stupid comments like that. That's wonderful that you could put your coworker's comments in the proper perspective. Congratulations on your outstanding progress and for not letting things like this derail you!
