Turkey vultures, roadrunners, hummingbirds

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

We are headed to San Diego this afternoon, after I teach my class at noon, for my nephew's little league baseball tournament. I just wanted to post a few pictures before we left. I will be bringing my laptop with me so I can log in and spin the wheel, at least...LOL.

I never know what I am going to find when I walk outside. This was an unusual sight. We see turkey vultures flying overhead, but rarely are they perched. Do you suppose they had their eye on something?

This next picture is the mother roadrunner who came to our patio. We now know what a roadrunner mating dance looks like. Haven't got a picture of that yet.

This next picture is "my" area...where I spend a lot of time. I have several places for the hummingbirds to perch. You can see one perched on the left side of the picture...look closely...LOL.

A roadrunner at the water fountain.

Hummingbird at dusk guarding the feeder.

Attack mode

I've seen six at one time, perched at various places in the garden, but I have never gotten a picture of more than two at a time.

And last, the baby roadrunner!

Hey...thanks SO much for sharing that great backyard area! I totally love the roadrunners...was one of my FAV cartoons back when I was a kid. I love your little hummingbirds too...I don't see them here in Florida although I've been told they are here. We always LOVED emoticon them when we had our little cabin in North Carolina. The humming bird feeders were the FIRST thing I put out whenever we made the trip up there...why oh why did we EVER sell that little slice of heaven? I surely miss it now! emoticon We'd probably be living there now..instead of in this big ole' monster home here in SWEATY Florida...oh well...hindsight right?

    Loved your pics! emoticon

These are wonderful! I can see the hummingbird on the left (I think). Haha, every time I hear about turkey vultures I remember what that ol' reprobate, Tom Waits, said once: "Yeah, we watch a lot of TV out at the ranch. Turkey Vultures, that is."

Great pix of the birds. I see hummers sometimes in my yard, but never can get a picture. Lots of crows/ravens, pigeons, doves, the little brown birds (I call all of the little ones sparrows), and one escaped parakeet (not mine). I have almost daily 'conversations" wsith the parakeet - I whistle & talk, he chirps back.
