30 Day Shred- thoughts?

Friday, July 23, 2010

Recently, I purchased the 'Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred' DVD from Target. I absolutely adore Jillian and have been wanting to try out some of her DVDs. I currently own the Wii fit "Ultimatum" game. I like it, but it can be annoying to operate the video game while trying to work out. I've heard wonderful things about the 30DS and figured that would be a good place to start.

I'd like to begin the DVD as soon as possible. However I am also in the process of completing the C25k program, so I'm not exactly sure how I want to begin incorporated 30DS into my fitness regime. Right now I am on week 5 and have built great endurance so far. I feel torn between wanting to push myself further and not wanting to push myself too far. Its very important to me that I be toned as well as thinner because I'm looking for the overall fit factor. Running has notably increased my leg muscles and core, but I've been sort of neglecting my upper body.

What do I do? Start now and complement C25k with the Shred? Or wait until I conquer C25k and then switch my focus to the DVD while maintaining a running program? Hmmm....

Any suggestions?

Great post I have been going back and fourth with this since May 1st I started my c25k training then and decided not to do the 30 day shred but I did do strength training on the machines at the gym. Well here we are almost to August and I am know doing training for a 10k program running 4 days a week.

So today this morning I decided to join the 30 day shred spark team and comment to doing it every other day as my strength training. I did this video last year and it kick my butt big time for me the Ab work was the hardest but as a runner it will help allot and I did see results from it inches lost but I got away from it and really need to see those quick results again.
I totally agree with PERFECTVELVET on the every other day if you are running. Also on the stretching try to do more then she has at the end of the video it will help on soreness at least it did for me.

One more thing On my first time doing her video when I got done I took a shower and went to bed when I woke up to go to the bathroom I basically could hardly walk to the bathroom and then when I went to sit on the toilet I thought it had been lowered to the ground it was a long way down there. LOL But it did get better it took about a week.

Sorry I carried on was just happy to see this post after deciding today to do the video.

    Love 30DS!

My recommendation would be to do the Shred on the days you aren't running. It's essentially circuit training with more of a focus on strength (I'm tempted to just do the strength and ab work from the video). I know it's supposed to be done every day, but I am not sure I agree with it. I did it for 8 days without a rest day, and I just feel like it goes against the effectiveness of rest days in building muscles and not damaging them. Now I'm incorporating rest days into my routine.

That said, it WILL kick your butt. It is a fabulous workout, and you'll be torn between praying for a quick death and rushing home from work the next day to do it again. I promise you that, lol. You'll see a huge increase in your stamina though, which I suspect will help with the running. (It's been too hot and humid for me to test my theory!)

I do think if you start, you start on the day of the week where you have two rest days. (I was running Tues, Thurs, Sat, so my recommendation would be to do it Sunday, so you have Monday to recover before running on Tuesday.) My knee bothered me after the first session, but that quickly went away. What really killed me were my arms, so get 2-3 lb weights. I started with 5 - bad idea! I can do 5 now, no problem, but starting with it was not a good idea, lol. In the video, they use 3 lbs.

Sorry this is so lengthy, but I hope it helps!
