Winning the War, One Battle at a Time

Thursday, July 22, 2010

I'm handling my new lifestyle choice one battle at a time. Last Saturday I found I could go to a cookout and not have to eat the potato salad and the hot dog rolls to be satisfied. Having a host and hostess (DD & SIL) that are into healthy eating helped immensely. They had alternatives for anyone who wanted it. I had turkey sausages, cucumber salad and veggies. I did have 2 drinks, but more carb friendly than I used to choose. I was pleased and was rewarded on weigh-in day.

Last night I faced the restaurant foe. I don't eat out often so it used to be a time to have the treats that I don't make at home. My strategy was to be prepared. I knew which restaurant we were going to. It was a steakhouse and I knew I would be ok. I actually went online to their website and checked out their menu. I chose 3 or 4 dishes that I would like. I looked up the nutritional numbers on each. That narrowed it down to 2. Although the menu was extensive, I knew that I'd be able to choose either and be fine. I chose grilled salmon, hold the rice and double on the veggies. I even left a little leeway and was able to have just a taste of someone's dessert without feeling badly about myself.

Today was payday pizza again. It smelled really good today, but I went in armed with my large bowl to fill with salad and a piece of grilled chicken. I had brought leftover steak, but was able to snag one of the few pieces of chicken they also order. That makes two pizza days faced and won!

Little by little, day by day I am feeling more comfortable and confident. I feel that my choices are becoming more of a habit than a chore. I know it's only been a bit more than 3 weeks, and I'm not saying that I expect to win every battle, but as long as I can keep winning the majority of the time I will succeed. I'm fortunate to have my Spark army for motivation and inspiration and my daughter, the drill sergeant emoticon encouraging me.

Other people win this war with weight issues. Now it's my turn to win (and to make sure it doesn't return like a zombie emoticon)

Great blog! It is one day at a day time and before we know it the days will all add up in the right direction. Like you I am really good at yo yoing with my weight. This time I want to be my last! So even if it takes a little longer I want to live and not feel deprived. Rather I say that I'm concentrating on the habits that will live with me for a life time!

It really is about making one choice at a time, and going in to Battle prepared. You are prepared with a Plan and you even have your 'Back-Up'--DD and SIL.
