Tubby the moose, cute reminder of my dad

Sunday, July 18, 2010

This is a plant holder for our yard that I affectionatly call Tubby, after my dad. When my dad was a baby he was a chubby little boy and his mother called him Tubby. Well, that stuck and it became his nickname, even tho he was as skinny as a string bean as a teen and young adult. All of my cousins called him Uncle Tubby, he was never called Uncle Don (Donovan being his name). When my dad retired from the Air Force he got a bit of a belly on him and then his nickname fit him.

My mom is from Burin, Newfoundland (Canada) and my folks would go back to her home for vacations when my grandmother was still alive. They would drive and take the ferry across to Newfoundland. One year they drove up and took my mom's sister Lil along and one of Lil's granddaughters. As they got off the ferry and were driving up the road my dad noticed that the cars in front of him were swerving into the other lane, as he got closer he saw why. A 2 year old bull moose was walking down the shoulder of the road and it seemed aggitated. As my dad started to swerve the moose decided he wanted to cross and my dad's mini van was in the way. The moose charged my dad's van going up over the hood into the windshield and onto the roof before falling back onto the road. No one inside the van was hurt but the van was totaled. Luckily for my folks there was a mounty coming toward them in the other lane and he stopped traffic so no one else would hit my folks. The mounty had to put the moose down at the scene. After they got home from their eventful trip we all started to pick on dad about the moose. If we saw a stuffed moose we would buy it for him. I found a pair of silver moose earrings and bought them and showed him. He got a big kick out of it. Saddly I lost my dad to cancer in Nov. 2001, but everytime I wore my moose earrings I would think of him.

About 3 years ago my mom and I were shopping in this little store and I saw this flower planter. I noticed the cute expression on its face and it's little tubby belly and I had to grin. I had been thinking of my dad alot lately and this just seemed the perfect thing. I picked it up and brought it to my mom and told her I was getting it. I looked at her and told her that it's name was Tubby, for dad. She got a sweet smile and a little tearry eyed and laughed. Tubby now sits out back near our patio set where we can look at him and grin. Family members all get the joke and think its great and we explain the story to those who don't know. So even tho he is gone in body my dad is still very much a part of our lives. All I have to do if I am missing him is look at Tubby and grin.

Now if Tubby doesn't put a smile out there, nothing will. Great memories, thanks for sharing.
