As most of you know I am diabetic and have had a lot of trouble with my Blood glucose readings lately or so I thought!

Last months results were: 1 pound lost and My A1C was 6.4
July's results were: 5 pounds lost and My new A1C was 6.8

I usually see my doctor every three months unless I have problems! I have been experiencing frequent UTI's lately once a month in the past three months! So I have seen him quiet often lately! He says my A1C is up because of the pain and infection I have been experiencing with the UTI's! He was not upset with my results and said he would not be until it reaches 7.0! This is when the disease I have can cause damage to organs in my body!

My insurance also requires me to go to a Diabetic Clinic that the hospital owns and see a counselor there! My registered dietiican that I started with at this clinic moved a year ago! So I have been seeing somebody, anybody, and they usually send me on my way within 30 minutes!

This time I was scheduled to see the new registered dietcian named Mrs. Lisa! She was very nice and I found out she had been conspiring (I mean talking) with my doctor! She immediately pulled out a goal sheet. So this is the plan for the next 3 months! emoticon

1) She wants me to lose at least 10 pounds in three months! I told her about being real emoticon ish! She smiled and said that's okay I really want to see more than that come off in three months! emoticon

2) My calories intake was reduced from 1200-1550 daily to 1200-1500! No biggie! emoticon

BUT NOW! I have to:
1) Limit my carbohydrate intake to no more than 10 carb choices a day! emoticon
2) 15 grams = 1 Carb choice
3) 3-4 veggie servings a day (Salads have been helping me with this)
4) 6-8 ozs of protein a day
5) She wants them entered into the SP nutrition tracker daily and a copy ran off for her!
6) I have a new carb counting sheet that she gave me that goes with me everywhere like
a new emoticon!

3) I am to report to her in two weeks to be weighed in and at this time my waist will also be measured as it was that day! emoticon This measurement she wants to go down by 3 inches in 3 months! emoticon This is to make me what they call ACCOUNTABLE! emoticon!

4) I thought I had been doing real good in the exercise area! Apparently, not good enough! I have been doing 3 days of 90 minutes of swimming! She did not like this! She feels I should be doing 5 days a week at least 30 minutes a day! emoticon The fitness center is open from 5am-10pm Monday-Friday! Working at night and needing sleep is no excuse! Get a planner an plan my days and pencil it in! emoticon The only problem I have with this is she doesn't really understand that 30 minutes is nothing to me! I enjoy swimming! Not only is it one of the best forms of exercise you can do! It helps me relax and the more I do the more I want to do! The moreI do the more it energizes me (or is this a conspiracy to get me to do more emoticon!)
1) This is to be tracked on the SP fitness tracker and a copy brung in to her!

5) My A1C is to be brought back up to 6.5 on my October blood work order!

After putting all of this on my goal sheet she jumped up and said I will be right back, and I seen her talking with someone on the phone in the next room! I sort of got nervous! She came back in the room and asked me some questions:
(1) April, do you use the hot tub any? I replied "Yes, of course it is wonderful!"
(2) Well guess what? I replied, "What!" "No hot tub for you any more my dear!"
(3) Why? "Because diabetics have a tendency to have bacteria to thrive in heat and we think
this might help the UTI problem!"
Lastly, your bathing suit needs to come off immediately when entering the locker room and new dry clothes put on! I always do this, but I just looked at her and said,
"Yes mame! " emoticon

How do I feel about this? It is different and I am having some trouble counting the carbs, but it will get easier I am sure!

I attended a week-long clinic for diabetics and found it very helpful.

I'm glad you've got a health coach like Lisa to help you and to monitor your progress! It looks like she's going to keep a tight reign on you too. emoticon I think it will help you to keep your health on your list of priorities. It's so easy to become overwhelmed by the demands of others and of life in general that we neglect something as important as our health. Looks like, this time, the pressure will be on for you to take care of YOU! emoticon

April you have been such a tower of strength for everyone else that I have no doubt you will be able to achieve everything your wonderful Mrs. Lisa has asked (demanded?) of you. I know you won't let those challenges beat you, that they will make you more determined to be the person you know you can be when you reach the end of those 3 months. This is your 'me' time and your chance to achieve all those goals.

You are going to do this and do it so well you will look back at this blog and wonder why you even doubted yourself. At last you have found the probable cause of all those painful and misery-making UTIs. That was the first question my doctor asked me when I'd visited him 3 times in 7 weeks with the same problem - did I use the local leisure centre's hot tub? My answer was 'yes', his was 'well you don't from now on'. I'm not diabetic, but he tells me hot tubs are a well known cause of UTIs.

Can't wait for regular updates on your progress cos I know you are going to surprise even Mrs. Lisa with your amazing efforts.

You can do this new plan - you can do it!! I'll be looking forward to your updated post and I'll bet you'll be looking forward to being healthier in many ways. Yay for having a measurable, realistic plan! Best wishes with all the tracking - some of it with the nutrition seems a bit redundant to me, but maybe I'm just confused about what I read. You can and will make this work - go for it!!

I think this lady is a prayer answered. I quit getting into hot tubs years ago, because of a nasty bacterial infection that they thought came from one we used on vacation. YUCK!

Both my brothers are diabetic (plus half my family), but the one brother is so good about keeping his sugar under control. I watch him eat. He will order his sandwich and only eat 1/2 of the bun. He will take 3 or 4 fries off of his wife's plate. He quit eating pancakes, because they are a trigger food for him. He only eats 1/2 of a baked potato if he orders one. He has been so good about doing that. He also lost a ton of weight eating this way. I look at him and wonder why I can't be as disciplined.

You take care of yourself Mountain Buddy, and listen to what Mrs. Lisa tells you. It sounds like she will have you under control in no time.

I think that's great that your insurance requires you to see a nutritionist. Mrs. Lisa sounds like she knows her stuff & the plan of action seems tough --but in the long run you will conquer & be victorious!

April, she sounds terrific, especially since she took the time to consult with your doctor and ask questions. As for the carb counting - let's get after some emails and see what we can come up with, 'cause I'm sure that EYE could benefit from her advice even if it's sorta indirect from her talks with YOU, lol... p.s. VERY interesting about the hot-tub connection, too!

That is a super plan. Keeping track of your carbs will get easier. My husband is a diabetic also and I've been tracking his carbs for over a year. Lisa sounds like a great support for you. I wish she lived closer to us.

Amen to Mrs. Lisa! New challenges for you, but nothing you can't handle! Those UTIs are so uncomfortable. You get that handled and you are going to be able to do more, more, more!
I'm glad you've got her on your team April! You will kick Chunky to the curb and down the street!!! emoticon

    Dear April,
As always I loved reading your blog! I am very optimistic about your sarg--I mean dietician. I thank God for giving me one in the beginning of my program along with some strict things I had to agree to in order to be a part of the program. It made all of the difference to me and my getting on the right track. I will be praying for you, dear friend! It won't be easy, but it will be satisfying and will yield some good results!!
Please keep us updated on your challenges, highs and lows! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Just curious. How does this Mrs. Lisa look? is she thin and healthy? From reading your blog I would say that your swimming might have something to do with your UTI's. I was a swimmer and water safety instructor in my youth and I love to swim but don't. We don't have a pool and I can't stand the indoor ones with the chlorine in your eyes. Maybe you should swim more days and less time swimming and wash your swim suit as bacterica can harbor in them. We never think about this, returning from the beach, rinse it out and then hang it up. It is good to have someone watching you like that. Drink cranberry juice often for the uti's.

Wow you have got a good plan for yourself! I am envious of how organized you are complete with itemized goals!. You are going to do it! Good for you!
PS Along the lines of UTIs and that region of the body I agree! I do all my exercise in shorts JUST SHORTS if you get my drift with an immediate shower afterwards and that has made a big difference in the quality of my life! Sal

I think that you are lucky to have so many people supporting you in your healthy goals. Lisa sounds much more involved than the "30 minute" group and her goals sound tough but doable. I hope that having "in person" accountability and online "spark friends" gives you that support that will benefit your health.

I also think that we all need a change-up in plans and a evaluation of our goals once in awhile. You have that and now we need to help you achieve them.

Mrs. Lisa sounds like a godsend! A plan is a good thing especially when you have to check in with the drill sergeant, aka dietician! emoticon emoticon

Great Blog! I can agree that 30 minutes seems short when we are doing an activity we really enjoy. The experts are always saying we need to change our activities to boost the weight loss. Do you think she wants you to make sure you exercise 5 days a week so you will change up your routine?

    3677 days ago
Well, my Dear, it looks as though you have your Marching Orders. I am looking forward to seeing a Turtle do a Marching Step! emoticon
Her orders (I mean Suggestions!) seem reasonable enough, and I KNOW you will do this and make yourself~and Mrs. Lisa~proud of you.
We are all here cheering for you!!
