#376: Life is Short, Sometimes Too Short

Thursday, July 15, 2010

My heart is hurting tonight. I got a telephone call from my sister. Her ex-husband, the father of her adult children, was rushed to a hospital this evening. Paul is only in his late 40s and had seen his doctor this afternoon complaining about a severe headache that kept him awake last night and didn't go away today.

After that appointment he returned to work where he passed out and was transported to the hospital where an MRI showed a mass on his brain. He's undergoing surgery now.

Just two months ago his wife died in her sleep.

As for him, it's too soon to know what will happen.

But for his children and those of us who have known him for what seems forever, his situation illustrates how short life sometimes is. We never know from moment to moment if we will be given another day.

That's why it is so vitally important we make amends with family and friends and tell those closest to us that we love and cherish them. If we wait, it may be too late.

Hug your children and your spouse or girlfriend or boyfriend. Try to live your life as if today may be your last one on earth. For it may be.

Whatever your religious beliefs, give thanks every morning when you start your day. Treat people with respect and courtesy. Enjoy yourself as much as you can. Give your best effort in all you do. At the end of the day you will feel fulfilled. For tomorrow isn't promised and may never come.

As for Paul and his family and others suffering today, please offer a prayer for a speedy recovery.

I am sorry to hear about that, my prayers go out to Paul and his family!!!

I know what you mean about life being to short. My family lost one of my cousin's at the age of 28 to Leukemia. It was horrible to watch him go through what he did before he died. It's been 7 years now, and it still weighs heavy on my mind like it was just days or weeks ago.

    Life is short.... too short!!!

    Lou,
    There can be miracles
    When you believe
    Though hope is frail
    It's hard to kill
    Who knows what miracles
    You can achieve
    When you believe
    Somehow you will
    You will when you believe

    I Believe in Miracles

Creation shows the power of God
    There's glory all around and
those who see must stand in awe,
    For miracles abound.

I cannot doubt the work of God,
It's plain for all to see:
The miracles that he has wrought
    Should lead to Calvary.

The love of God! O power divine!
    'Tis wonderful to see
    The miracle of grace performed
    With-in the heart of me.

    (Chorus)
    I believe in miracles
I've seen a soul set free
    Miraculous the change in one
    redeemed through Calvary;
I've seen the lily push its way
    up through the stubborn sod
    I believe in miracles for
    I believe in God!

    And mircales come through prayer.

Oh Lou, this is so sad. I will continue to pray for peace for all of you, and healing for Paul. Please keep us updated on this.
My sister died about 20 years ago and we had been at odds for a few years. She was angry at me, had moved out of the state and I couldn't locate her. She finally called and we started talking and made up only months before she died. I was so thankful we did. I only regret the time we were apart, and the time wasted over nothing. She was only 41. It's very hard to understand it when someone is that young. My friends Mom just passed on July 5th at 97 years old and that is a celebration of life. She lived a full life.
As you said we have to live everyday as though it could be our last, because no one is promised tomorrow.
You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

You are so right - we should be sure we tell those we love how important they are to us. We cannot take tomorrow for granted.

    So sorry.

Oh, Lou, what a difficult thing. *gentlehugs* I lift up Paul and those who love him and care for him, asking for a supernatural touch from God, divine wisdom, skill, and awareness for his medical providers. Though I am very happily remarried, I still care a great deal for my ex, so I can understand your sister's compassion for the father of her children. I pray for each of them to receive comfort from our Comforter, the Holy Spirit, that God Himself will touch their hearts as only He is able. I pray the same for you, brother. Please keep us posted. You are so right about letting those you love KNOW it. My niece has been gone some 16 years now. She died at 27. My one solace is that the last words I spoke to her the last time I saw her were: Bye, Jenie. I love you. My last act in her life was to hug and kiss her. That brings me so much comfort. Love, hug, kiss, celebrate life.

Oh, Lou, that is so terribly sad! His wife must not have been very old, either, to die in her sleep like that! Oh, the pain of losing a loved one!

My brother died still angry at me for a very self-righteous thing I'd said to him months before we found out he had brain cancer. He hung up on my as I pleaded with him to forgive me. It's the biggest regret I have, but at least I know I tried.

You are so right about not knowing. One of our sons' classmates is in critical condition (or he may have passed away--I'm out of town) because he sped on his motorcycle without a helmet after midnight the other night, and lost control of his bike. It really caused them to think things over, I'm sure.

Have a peaceful night, Lou. Know that your friends will pray for your family. Your friend, Lori
