"Saggy baggy skin"

I've been getting probably 1-2 private messages every day asking me if I have issues with excess skin now that I've lost over 100 pounds. Some of these messages are very tactful, and I'm more than happy to answer them. However, a few of them have been offensive and leave me feeling a little insulted, so I thought I would address it in a public blog. The most recent e-mail asked me, "Do you have all kinds of extra saggy baggy skin now? That's my biggest fear about losing weight!" and another, "I am so scared of getting gross saggy skin..."

Asking a question like that is like me saying to a redhead, "Red hair repulses me! I just think it's awful, and I would be horrified if I had red hair! By the way, do you have red hair?"

I understand that saggy skin a fear of anyone that is trying to lose weight. I've thought about it a lot over the past 11 months as I've lost. No, excess skin isn't pretty, but it's certainly not a reason to stay overweight!

To address my skin issue: OF COURSE my skin has not snapped back to how it looked when I was a teenager. The extra weight caused lots of stretch marks. Losing the weight has given me trouble areas as far as skin goes--my arms now have "wings", my stomach looks like a deflated balloon (thin skin, wrinkly, etc), my boobs are no longer perky, and my thighs don't look like your average 28-year old's thighs (the inner thighs sag).

I thought I would be HORRIFIED at all the excess skin from losing weight, but I'm really not that troubled by it. I would like to get a tummy tuck and a brachioplasty (to fix my arm skin), but my thighs and boobs are very easy to cover up with clothing and the right bra. If I don't end up getting the plastic surgery, I'd be okay with that, too.

And besides, I MUCH prefer the "saggy baggy" skin to the 100+ pounds of excess fat! My skin might tighten up over time, but even if it doesn't, the weight loss was still totally worth it. And I'm SO MUCH HEALTHIER than I was before.

I've gotten so many wonderfully nice comments that I'm completely overwhelmed! I thank you all so much for your support, cheers, and well wishes. I wish the best for each of you in your own journey!

I'm sorry people have been insensitive about this! I just wanted to say though, that you look FABULOUS! If I ever manage to lose as much weight as you have I will embrace my "saggy baggy skin" with as much joy as I can manage. I would much rather have excess skin than excess pounds. Amazing job on your weight loss. You are so inspiring to me.

BTW- thanks for the list of common questions and answers on your page. They're things I would like to know the answer to, but that I'd never have the courage to ask you myself.

Slimkatie - I wish I could say that I am shocked and amazed by the rude comments that you are getting but unfortunately, I am not.

I am no longer surprised (or offended for that matter) by the absolute tackiness and audacity of some people's attitudes and behavior towards people who are overweight (even if the other person is overweight too).

While it would be nice to think that everyone here in SP land is not like this, as you have illustrated, that is simply not the case. This is probably just a pretty good sampling of society as a whole. Who knows, maybe it's just an example of social media behavior.

Anyway, congrats on your weight loss and I am one who was truly motivated by your last blog with the pictures as much as I am with this one with your attitude towards your new body and overall health.

I am and will continue to be motivated by your accomplishments and attitude and remain a loyal fan and subscriber.

This is a concern of mine as well and I will welcome being healthy regardless of how my skin looks. To try and give them the benefit of the doubt it may just be that they feel safe revealing their fears to you because you would understand them and they don't think about the consequences of how it would affect you. I think it is awesome that you address them so frequently and publicly! Think of how many people you are helping along their journey!

Thanks for taking the time to write about the topic in this blog. I was at first amazed that folks could send you emails about 'saggy skin'; but then realized that a lot of folks out there with a lot to loose are probably worried about the topic and just wanted to know.

Your response was great, and I hope it eliminated the 'saggy skin' excuse or worry from many peoples minds!

    You are awesome.

WORD. Very well said! I'm glad you wrote about this, because it's true... there are so many people that are afraid of getting 'wings', but come on... are you really gonna let THAT keep you overweight?

You are absolutely gorgeous and I'm glad that you can accept your body for the incredible, perfectly functioning piece of beauty that it is. That is such an important part of this process.

I think you look wonderful. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I would rather have saggy skin than to be 100+ pounds over weight like I am today.

I often wonder (but not really fear) how my body will look once I'm in maintenance . I do notice sagging already after 60 lbs of loss, but I hope that developing some muscle tone will help. I DEFINITELY want a breast reduction and lift once I'm done losing weight though. Bring it on!
