Another abandoned kitten

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Last night as I was driving into town I found another kitten someone abandoned on our lonely country road. How can people do this? We already have 2 cats and this is a kitten my dh estimates at a starving 10 wks old. It just walked out in front of the car and flopped down in the is so small that it could easily have been run over. I stopped the car and it didn't move, so I picked it up, put it in the car and brought it home. It now has a full belly, but all it's little bones stick out. Luckily, it is long-haired so it doesn't look too bad. It is very affectionate with people but is not used to other cats or dogs. I plan to keep it for perhaps a few weeks or a month to get it used to other pets and then take it into the Ottawa Humane Society. I have not seen any signs of it using the litter box yet, so that is another concern. I will try to post a pic of it on my Sparkpage later. We are calling it Pumpkin for now.
Once years ago we saw a cat and didn't take it home until too late and it died from malnutrition. Frodo is a cat that we found badly mauled in the middle of the road (the vet said that it wasn't run over, someone threw it out the window) and we nursed him to health and gave it to friends. Neiko is my fiesty little black kitten that was abandoned and so starved that she miscarried all over my couch when we brought her home (we neutered her as soon as we could). Plus we have given several cats to the humane society (the last was a mom and 6 kittens, most of whom had to be put down because they were in such bad condition). So now, I don't have any qualms about donating the abandoned kittens/cats we find to the Humane Society as long as I keep them long enough to fatten them up and get them healthy enough so that they are not put down when we give them to the society. I don't mind fostering our furry friends for a while, but there is really no way we can keep them all.
I still don't get how anyone can be so cruel as to abandon a pet. Oh well, little Pumpkin will be fine. We'll foster her long enough to get her/him in good shape and when I post the pic it will be obvious that this cutie will find a good home.

Ah Bless you Shirley, it's a wonderful thing you have done for the wee soul.
My own dog Ben was a rescue dog and it is amazing how much happiness he gives us.
By the way my sisters dog, a Tibetan Spanial is called Frodo LOL.
    Take care!

I can relate. We live in the country too and could not count the number of dogs and cats that have been dumped here. My son is allergic so we can't give any of them a home. I would like to be at the stuffing out of everyone of these creeps that does this.

I agree-I simply can't understand how anyone can simply "dump" former pets. All of mine have been rescues, and I would have it no other way. Your kindness, and willingness to take action has given many wonderful animals, and people a better quality of life. emoticon

I hat it when people do that. All our pets have been rescue animals with the exception of the ones we breed for sale. The rescue animals are all house pets but the big guys are not and the little ones love to walk past the kennels and drive the big guys crazy. I swear they switch their little tails back and forth just to tease them. Can you possilby keep three cats?

I wish we were closer I would take her/him. We are looking for a companion for Mokiejoe. And believe me he is well loved and loves back. I hate people who do that to an animal or anything for that matter.

That's so sweet. I'm glad there are kind souls like yours looking out for them. One way to measure a person's true worth is how they treat the least among us - including animals that are helpless to save themselves.

And you should have no worries about giving them to the humane society! Two of my biggest loves, Ellie and Star, came into my life through the shelters.
