#368: Create a Positive Attitude Foundation

Monday, July 05, 2010

If you are like many, maybe most, people, one of your first thoughts when you wake up is "Darn, I've got to go to work again today." Of course, your words are likely to be a tad stronger, aren't they?

But every day we awake is a gift and should be cherished. Most days will present us a variety of opportunities and situations that will test our faith and our attitude. Having a regimen that will rev up our positive mental attitude the first thing in the morning gives us the foundation on which our days will be based.

Here are four steps to creating a positive mental attitude every day:

1. START YOUR DAY WITH ENTHUSIASM -- Begin singing or clapping your hands or telling yourself how great you feel as you get out of bed, anything to get the blood pumping and your attitude warmed up. Proclaim out loud that it will be a terrific day, that you can't wait to get started and that you are eager to learn what the day will hold for you. Listen to upbeat music and dance in the shower instead of tuning in to the depressing news.

2. NOURISH YOUR MIND -- Don't reach for the newspaper over breakfast. Instead, read from the Bible or positive thinking books or listen to positive thinking tapes. Read your list of positive affirmations. As we nourish our bodies with nutritious food, so too should we feed our minds encouraging, uplifting thoughts at the beginning and throughout our days.

3. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS -- Remember that the early seafaring explorers began their travels thinking the world was flat and believed when they got as far as they could see that they would fall off the edge of the world? We know that didn't happen. What did happen was when they got as far as they could see, they could see even further. Broaden your mental horizons. Do not be limited by the way others act or think. You'll soon set your positive mental attitude on a track to expect success. Your positive thinking will not allow little problems sink your attitude but will keep you riding high throughout the day.

4. CREATE POSITIVE THOUGHTS AND SIGNS -- Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar talks of a friend who is so positive he never stops at a red light -- he merely waits for the more positive "go" light to turn green. He also never refers to Saturday and Sunday as the "week end" but rather to the more positive "strong end." When you get sick, call it a "warm" instead of a "cold." Whatever symbols you create, make them the reverse of the negative ones we face daily.

If you need an inspiring passage to get you pumped up, try repeating this one from Isaiah 40:31 --

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint."

Above all, rejoice in the day. Welcome it with open arms instead of a scowl. Believe, truly believe, it will be a day of achievement and positive relationships. Create your positive attitude foundation and your days will never be the same.

Instead of dreary, negative thinking, you will soon find yourself looking for the positives that exist in all situations. And you will develop an attitude of success thinking that will carry you further than you believed possible.
