Bart Yasso on Comrades (especially for RUNROW :) )

Friday, June 25, 2010

From this week's Comrades Marathon newsletter:

Bart Yasso is the Editor at large for USA Runners World, and is a USA Running Legend and the world over. Bart has run marathons, and ultra marathons on every continent and this year was his first attempt at the Comrades Marathon. "Thanks to everyone that puts on this great race. After 33 years of running around the world I finally did the ultimate race. I never thought there was a race I could call the perfect race, the greatest race and the ultimate challenge. Comrades is all 3 wrapped up in one. For me Sunday, 30 May was the greatest running honor of my life. Crossing the finish line and seeing the Comrades logo on the grass was nirvana. I have no idea if I will ever return to Comrades as a runner. I hope I can return someday as a journalist or support crew for other runners.'' '

Thanks so much RUNROW for the link to the Bart Yasso videos!!!
I watched them in the weeks leading up to the big day. I cried when I watched number 2 in the series. Wonderful!
(They can be found on the Runners World website.)

And I think I saw Bart Yasso when we were just entering Durban with about 8 Ks still to go.
I ran behind a smallish, althletic looking man wearing a 'stars and stripes' running top and shorts, but by that stage I could no longer read his name on his race bib - too tired to focus my eyes! But I think it was him as he finished just a few minutes ahead of me.

I have heard Yasso speak a couple times: at the Big Sur Marathon and the Cal Intenational Marathon.

I like to say that I passed Bart Yasso during the Big Sur Marathon. It's true. It's also true that he was in a car (he was not running that year) and I passed them on foot and his vehicle drove along slowly so BY could chat with us runners.

Thank you, thank you for the great blog. I have tears in my eyes thinking about your wonderful accomplishment. I cannot imagine how challenging the race must have been and how extraordinarily exhilarating it must have felt to have completed it.

Sorry for my pestering you about Bart's videos but I found them so inspirational. They really spoke to me about the greatness of some runners. Here is someone who had many great running experiences based on his speed; and now, he is happiest with his accomplishment in finishing the Comrades---no concern about how fast he went or who passed him.

I hope you recover completely from the Comrades and are looking optimistically forward to new running challenges. Fantastic accomplishment!

And fabulously well done on 30/5. As you know, I think it's a very long drive :)) and admire you for running it!
